We had the good fortune of connecting with Rhonda Dennis and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Rhonda, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
I worked for a large payroll company and my husband was at the time, five years from retirement. I have always cooked for large crowds so I decided to start a restaurant. Breakfast was my dads favorite meal of the day so it felt like a no brainer to do something that I loved.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
R & R Breakfast Spot is a unique small restaurant hidden in a small plaza in Chino. We serve very unique dishes such as Cajun Alfredo & Grits, Shrimp Scampi & Grits, and a very tasty Shrimp & Grits along with many other breakfast and lunch dishes. We are famous for the Eric (Three Wings & a Waffle) and the Dijon (Two Pieces of Catfish & Strawberry Shortccake French Toast).
I am most proud of the organic growth that we’ve experienced. I had never worked in a restaurant or catered before the restaurant started. I followed the guidance that God led me on when I woke up one day and had an epihpany that I wanted to start my own business.
We started on January 7, 2020 which was two short months before the COVID hit. This allowed us to reinvent ourselves daily and see what did and didnt work. We learned quickly how to evaluate menu items to keep us in business to lessen the cost of food loss. Our biggest challenge to date is the cost of food! Breakfast food has been hit the hardest with most of the items that we purchased doubling and sometimes tripling in cost.
We want the world to know that we are built on love and a commitment to serving great food and an even better dining experience.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Places I love to eat!
Chef2theBone – Corona
Sunday Dinner Soul Food – Corona
Sharon’s Creole Kitchen – Murrietta
Sugarcane Junkie – San Bernardino
Phlipps – San Bernardino
Hang Out Spots
Redlands Market Night
Victoria Garden’s – Paul Martin’s – Happy Hour
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
The mandatory shoutout is to God! He ordained my steps to get here and He has held me through the storms and hard times just as He promised He would do.
My shoutout is to all restaurant owners that made it through the COVID and to my customers. I relied on so many people to help me throughout my journey! I started my business two months before the COVID so I had no idea what I was doing. These people are the real MVP’s!
