Meet Sumit Singh

We had the good fortune of connecting with Sumit Singh and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Sumit, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
Robin and Lily began as a very personal creative project between my wife, Niharika Singh, and me (Sumit Singh). Both of us have always been drawn to storytelling and imaginative worlds, and we often found ourselves talking about the cartoons and stories we grew up with in the 90s; the ones that made childhood feel adventurous, mysterious, and full of possibility.
Those shows weren’t just entertainment; they sparked curiosity and imagination. They made you feel like the world was bigger than what you could see. At some point we started wondering: what would it look like to build something like that for kids today?
One evening we began sketching characters and imagining a world built around curiosity, creativity, and playful discovery. That’s when the characters Robin and Lily first appeared. What started as a few sketches and conversations between the two of us slowly evolved into a much larger vision.
Today, we think of Robin and Lily as a kids media company that is building a storytelling universe for children. Through comic books, stories, animated seres, creative activities, and eventually toys and merchandise, we want to create characters that kids can grow up with and feel emotionally connected to.
Robin and Lily themselves embody the spirit we wanted to bring back into children’s storytelling. They are curious explorers who ask questions, experiment with ideas, travel through different worlds, and approach everything with a sense of wonder. Whether they’re discovering science, exploring new places, or simply observing the everyday magic of the world around them, their adventures are always driven by curiosity.
For Niharika and me, the dream is to build something that becomes part of a child’s imagination, the kind of characters and stories kids remember years later when they think back to their childhood.
In many ways, Robin and Lily is our attempt to create a modern storytelling universe that celebrates curiosity, creativity, and the magic of being a kid.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
Robin and Lily is a kids media company that my wife, Niharika Singh, and I (Sumit Singh) started with the idea of building a storytelling universe for children centered around curiosity, imagination, and adventure.
Growing up, many of the cartoons and stories that inspired us weren’t just entertainment, they shaped how we saw the world. They made childhood feel magical and full of discovery. We wanted to create something that brings that same sense of wonder to kids today.
The characters Robin and Lily began as simple sketches and story ideas between the two of us, but over time we realized they could become part of something much bigger. Today we’re building Robin & Lily as a storytelling universe through comic books, stories, animation series, creative activities for children, and eventually toys, merchandise, and experiences that kids can grow up with.
What makes the brand special to us is that it’s driven by curiosity. Robin and Lily are explorers of the world. They experiment with ideas, travel, discover science, and approach everything with imagination and wonder. Through their adventures, we want kids to feel inspired to ask questions, explore creativity, and see the world as an exciting place full of possibilities.
The journey of building the brand has been both exciting and challenging. Creating a new children’s universe from scratch means learning everything from storytelling and design to building a brand and reaching families. But every step of the process has reinforced our belief that stories and characters still have the power to inspire young minds.
Our long-term vision is to build Robin and Lily into a global kids storytelling universe, the kind of characters children grow up with and remember long after childhood.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If a friend were visiting Orange County, I’d probably start in the City of Orange itself. The Orange Circle (Old Towne Orange) is a great place to walk around because it has that charming historic California feel with antique shops, coffee spots, and small restaurants. It’s the kind of place where you can spend an afternoon just wandering and discovering little hidden spots.
From there I’d probably take them to the coast. Laguna Beach is one of my favorite places in Orange County — the scenery is beautiful and the whole town has a creative energy with galleries, artists, and great ocean views. It’s a perfect place to relax and take in the California vibe.
For food, Orange County has an amazing mix of cultures, so I’d definitely take them somewhere local for tacos or Asian food — both are incredible here.
And if someone is visiting with family or kids, it’s hard not to mention Disneyland in Anaheim, which is practically part of the cultural identity of the area.
Overall what I love about Orange County is that it has this unique combination of beach life, creativity, and laid-back energy that makes it a really fun place to explore.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I’d actually like to give a shoutout to the 90s cartoons that inspired us growing up, shows like Dexter’s Laboratory, The Flintstones, and The Jetsons. Those cartoons were incredibly imaginative and playful, but they also sparked curiosity about the world. They made science feel fun, the future feel exciting, and everyday life feel full of adventure.
In many ways, those shows planted the seeds for what eventually became Robin and Lily. When my wife and I began building the characters and the storytelling universe around them, we often found ourselves thinking back to the creativity and boldness of those classic cartoons.
Whenever we face challenges while building the brand, it’s inspiring to remember the animators, writers, and showrunners who created those iconic shows. They built entire worlds that generations of kids still remember and love. It reminds us that with enough imagination, persistence, and curiosity, it’s possible to create stories that leave a lasting impact.
In a way, Robin and Lily is our small tribute to that era of storytelling and the creators who showed us how powerful children’s imagination can be.
