We had the good fortune of connecting with Arit Barrow and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Arit, Let’s talk about principles and values – what matters to you most?
My moral compass is composed of many values, but its leading value is integrity. Leading my life with integrity is important because it requires me to stay true to me, my morals, and allows me to be unapologetically me no matter who I interact with. Acting without integrity presents the risk of dealing with problems down the road that could have easily been avoided in the beginning. Acting with integrity is by no means always a walk in the park, but it allows me to focus on what’s important instead of spending time covering my tracks. As an individual, I aim to do the right thing even when faced with a tough decision. I create my work with respect, accountability, and adhere to the highest ethical standards.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
LaVera’s Lens Photography is a raw, simple, and unpretentious photography service that creates unforgettable photographic timepieces for art aficionados. I aim to preserve life’s moments by capturing the natural, candid, and unspoiled essence of my subjects so that they will be admired for a lifetime. I specialize in using natural light, highlighting unique details, and capturing raw emotions to grasp the pure essence of any subject. I would not be here today without the support of my loved ones. Their support motivates, excites, and grounds me. One of the biggest lessons my support system has taught me is to stay true to me by following my heart and to never stop creating. This journey has not been easy, but my support system is always there during challenging times. Life is full of waves, but you just have to learn to ride them out. As a photographer, my viewfinder is focused on finding potential in the simplest places, preserving the candid essence of people’s lives, and allowing my photos to tell their own unique stories.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Love this question, because I feel like I am always playing tour guide when people come to visit. If we were not in the middle of a pandemic, I would love to visit these spots with my friend: Bossa Nova in WeHo, Hilltop Coffee + Kitchen in Inglewood, Abbot’s Pizza Company, Mama Shelter, El Floridita, El Matador Beach, Malibu Wine Safari, Getty Villa, LACMA, Santee Alley, Numero Uno Pizza, Alcove, Yxta, Griffith Observatory. I’m not sure how much of this would actually get accomplished, but at least we would have options!
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I believe the African proverb “it takes a village to raise a child” is not only applicable for children, for anyone going through life. You cannot go through life alone. We are social creatures that crave community. All of us are shaped by the emotional support, guidance, and love of those closest to us. One’s village can give you a sense of belonging and influence who you become. I can say that I am the woman I am today because of my village (they know who they are); near and far. Although I love my village, I would like to specifically dedicate this shoutout to my mom. She has loved, supported, and cared for me unconditionally. She is understanding, resilient, and forgiving. My mom has always encouraged me to do what I love and to use the gifts that have been given to me. Most importantly, she has believed in me when I didn’t believe in myself. Without her, there would be no me and there would certainly be no LaVera’s Lens Photography. I am thankful that my village is always supporting my endeavors, empowering me, and all around positively influencing my life.
