We had the good fortune of connecting with Ashley Teel and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Ashley, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking.
Risks play an essential role in every action and decision you make in life. It propels you into a whirlwind of hope, anxiety, and excitement all at the same time. Taking risks forced me to get uncomfortable with myself, and open up in ways i never could have imagined. It has taught me that no matter what, i can push through it, and make out onto the other side. Regaurdless, it has absolutely brought out the best in me, to achieve my goals and make my dreams a reality. Someone once told me that if you are not completely and utterly terrified, then don’t do it. That’s when i decided to finally step up and start off on my own. My terms, my rules, and my vision. I jumped at the chance to start my business in Phenix Salon Suites here in Redondo Beach, Ca. Working in a traditional salon was hindering my growth as a hair stylist and person- mentally, emotionally, and creatively. I knew i had more to offer and show everyone what i got! Making this move has leveled up my game and get my feet wet in operating my own business. It has been the most gratifying, painful, and amazing process to go through. I’ve truly learned the huge responsibility of being your own boss and reaping all the benefits that comes with it. It has completely changed my life in the most surprising way, and i couldn’t be happier. I finally found my home, and my tribe. The place where i belong; along side of uber talented artists and get to creatively tranform the lives of my guests through beauty.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
What sets me apart in this industry is my ability to have compassion and love for every guest that sits in my chair. I really pay attention their wants and needs. I have patience and truly listen. I get the freedom and creativity to tranform their beauty, not only from their outside appearance but from deep within that brings out confidence and power. I walked into beauty school, very naive and shy, not knowing a single thing about hair. I dived right in and took on the challenge. I fought, i struggled, fell on my face and sacrificed my personal life to succeed in this industry. It didn’t come easy for me. Education is where i found my love of color and cutting techinques. I am so proud to be a color specialist now that uses innovative techniques to achieve vibrancy and fluidity throughout the hair. I see the head in 3d and look at hair as a scuplture. I use the features of my guest, painting a work of art. Cutting techniques play an important role when achieving the perfect color design for your guest. Carving and sculpting out the hair first, allows me to play with the shadows and lights that live within the hair to create multi demsional color. I learned that you need to stay humble if you want to succeed in this competitive industry. Remaining grounded you can build a network that allows you to collaborate effectively in business relationships. This has taught me to pay attention and remain open to learn from top stylists with no ego. Im so excited for my business, Rebelle Hair Haus, to expand with my own product line and clothing brand. I want to provide the world with products that keep the highest integrity of hair. It stems from pure, natural ingredients that strengthen and nuture the hair from within. With this, i want the proceeds to go to the homeless and give them new opportunities that they wouldn’t get otherwise. If i can change just one life, that would be amazing.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Some of my favorite places i love sharing with friends and family that are visiting, is starting in Santa Monica. There are so many corky, cool boutiques and thrift stores to check out. I love walking around 3rd Street promenade and side streets to find cool gems that you couldn’t find anywhere else. If you head south a bit, Venice beach boardwalk is another crazy, fun place to hang. You can chill on beach and tan, watch the unique street performers execute the most creative shows and check out the most interesting stores ever. It brings in a very eclectic crowd- never a dull moment. If you can score tickets, Hollywood Bowl never disappoints in its array of amazing singers and performers. Speaking of Hollywood, you can go to the Chinese Theater, The wax Museum, and take the tour of celebrity homes which is always amusing. Im such a foodie, we gotta check out some of these restaurants. The Attic in Long Beach, Ca. has over the top mac’n cheese topped with hot chettos and a bloody mary topped with mini burgers or anything else you can imagine. Another fun place to go is the Sugar Factory in San Diego,Ca. This place has every sweet treat you can imagine. They have the best burgers, down to shakes topped with candy, and alcoholic drinks that come with floating gummies, swirled lolipops and dry ice.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I want to dedicate my success of my achievements and goals to everyone who believed in me even when i couldn’t believe in myself. First, i want to thank my mom and dad for always supporting my dreams and helping with every detail that went into this adventure of starting my business. I love you with my whole heart. Next, is my amazing assistant and marketing manager, Gabriella Segura. She keeps my life in order, from runnig my website, editing my instagram, and keeping me relavent in this competitive industry. Not only is she my niece but my best friend and confidant; you truly are amazing. To Vanessa Amaton, such a talented hair artist who has taught me so many skills, techniques, and discipline to make me the best hair stylist/ owner i have come to be. If it wasnt for her pushing me and reminding me of what could be, i would have never made the jump into a salon suite. Thank you for supporting me through all the breakdowns, business paperwork, late nights, the highest achievements, and teaching me what a real boss lady is all about. You slay at juggling motherhood, running a business, killing it in the hair game while making it look so effortless. Your generosity and patience means the world to me. Last but not least, to my tribe, my girls, the best friends a girl can ask for. To the master stylists i learn from everyday, and activates that fought for industry-Mitzi Koch, Lucy Wilson, and Michelle Hallman. To my teachers-Dena Alamarez, Lola Manzenko, and Kat Moini; your love, support, and loyalty has never waivered. Thanks for having my back and keeping me humble. Im so proud i get to stand along side such a fabulous mix strong, beautiful successful women. All of you have played such an instrumental role in my life and career. THANK YOU!
