We had the good fortune of connecting with Cholly Cunningham and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Cholly, what’s your definition for success?
My definition of success would encompass purpose, significance and meaning. With anything that we choose to do, in hopes of achieving success, I feel those three things are vital. In my experience I’ve obtained, observed, and felt the most holistic success and fulfillment in my life and craft, by walking in my purpose, performing significant tasks and sharing the meaning of my perspective with the world.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My art is vibrant, bold and imaginative. My spirit is in every one of my works of art, it’s authentically vulnerable. I consistently dig in the depths of my own closet and emerge with unapologetic truths. I’m most proud of my openness towards growth. My willingness to confront challenge instead of shying away from it, has allowed me to embark on new levels artistically and throughout my life journey. This helps me venture into the unknown and not be fearful of failure, but more so excited for the lessons. With this I am able to branch out into new endeavors such as apparel design, music & performance, and social activism. I’ve gotten to where I am professionally by being an industry chameleon. I learned to adapt to varying work environments, while inadvertently absorbing new skills. This played a positive role in my growth and professional advancement. I believe being creatively flexible with my skill set, taught me a great dealt and made my journey easier. I’ve learned along the way to be gentle with myself, by practicing self love and being my biggest cheerleader instead of critic, helps me tremendously. My favorite lesson was learning how resilient I am and how sometimes obstacles are the things that strengthen our endurance, in turn allowing us to kick through the barriers we encounter in life. Creating Unicorn Borne Productions gave me the ability to create without constraints. Spanning across Video Production, Illustration, Photography and Design, I’ve been able to work with a variety of clients. While learning new techniques and sharpening old ones, my journey has been bumpy but beautiful. It has enabled me to build an authentic, uplifting and honest brand. Bringing joy, truth, and provoking thought is what Unicorn Borne is all about.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
As I’ve lived in Los Angeles on and off for a number of months, I haven’t quite honed in on favorite places. But if I were to show a friend around we definitely would frequent the beach, bookstores, museums and somewhere in nature where we could get lost and take in the views.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would love to give a shout out to my biggest supporter Lindsay Kean. I was lucky enough to befriend Lindsay in art school and we’ve been going strong ever since. Through the years we even roomed together, so she definitely has been right there with me through my pits and peaks. Lindsay has always been someone I could talk to, no matter what it was she was all ears. We constantly bounce ideas off each other. Lindsay’s creativity and positive vibes motivate me and have brought a lot of light to my life. From adolescence to our adult years I don’t know who or where I would be without a friend like her. Lindsay’s an extremely talented, hard working, and vivacious person, I’m honored to call her my best friend.
