Decision Makers Series: avoiding decision fatigue by adopting effective habits


There’s a ton of research around how setting habits can help us conserve energy because it reduces the number of decisions we have to make in a day. However, not all habits are created equal and so we’ve asked our community to tell us about the habits they have been most effective for them.

A really important habit to develop early and one that I have always maintained is being prepared beyond what the “normal” expectations for your job require. As a Director, I find that sitting with the project, doing research, preparing your shots, digging into the story, making up a list of questions and getting as much information as you can goes a long way to your success when you get to shoot day. Self discipline and consistency is a must in any type of field but most especially when you are your own boss. I do things that are true to myself and surround myself with like-minded people that simultaneously strive for the betterment of their own lives. That goes a long way because then you have a crew of people actively moving forwards instead of backwards and that’s the kind of space I want to be in. I’m always mindful of who I give my energy to and I never dwell on comparing myself to others. You have your own journey as others do, don’t discount what you been through and how far you’ve come. The habits that have helped me succeed have been faith, developing a plan and following through, waking up early, practicing gratitude, and taking responsibility for my decisions. One of the hardest but most rewarding things is to truly have faith, faith in your work, in yourself, in the path that starts unveiling before us. It’s very challenging, especially when things don’t go our way, however when we hang on to that certainty that everything is the way it should be, then it truly happens and things shift.
