One of my favorite affirmations is “Clear intent – Outcome free”. I don’t recall where I read that but it essentially means to have a clear vision or idea of what it is you want to achieve – then plan, research, and execute, and then let it be. Do not fret or worry about the outcome because in the first part you have done all you can do to achieve what you wanted to do. that’s what it means to be outcome free. The only thing I will add on is to review the outcome to see what you did right and what you could improve on if necessary. Read more>>

I sure do! During early months of COVID, I took very little to no clients. However, a friend of a friend reached out for low back help and 2 months into our sessions he had hand written me a card with his favorite quote and it’s been my lock screen on my phone since. The quote was the most beautiful things I have ever read and brought tears to my eyes to know I had impacted someone’s life during this uncertainty of 2020. Finding my purpose, sharing my passion and the pursuit of happiness have been my mantra. The quality of life starts with ME! This is your LIFE. Do what you love and do it often. If you don’t like something, change it. If you don’t like your job quit. If you don’t have enough time, stop watching TV. If you’re looking for the love of your life, stop; They will be waiting for you when you start doing things you love. Read more>>

“Comparison is the thief of joy” is a quote I call on a lot. I think of it as a reminder when I begin to compare myself to others or even to myself. For instance, if I had an amazing day of work one day and then the next, perhaps I don’t quite find my groove, it’s deadly to compare the days. It’s even worse to compare oneself with others. I like that these six simple words can wake me up to the real reason we are here; to experience what makes our heart sing. Read more>>

“I long so much to make beautiful things, but beautiful things require effort and disappointment and perseverance.” – Vincent Van Gogh This quote hangs on the wall of my home office and reminds me daily that I was made to create beautiful things, and beautiful things are seldom perfect. They take time, failure, and hard work. I often feel compelled to chase after perfection that doesn’t exist. There is a silent, pressing inertia within me that wonders if I could just create until the dissatisfaction disappears, then I can finally be at peace, or maybe that I’d be done with the constant frustration that creating requires. Of course! My whole life is structured around this quote, ” Walk in your truth! At the end of the day, you will have to look yourself in the mirror and sleep at night, so do whatever makes you happy unapologetically.” Everyone is not meant for everybody so shine on and the ones who get it, get it and the ones who don’t, don’t. There are so many I cycle through, it’s hard to pick just one. They change and come back, get replaced by stronger ones…Right now, it’s “I’m going to put my work TO WORK.” That has been my mantra in 2020. It means how can I take what I already know how to do and use it toward issues that seem so overwhelming, I feel I couldn’t possibly change them? That’s a great excuse to do nothing, so instead of trying to figure out “something” to do, I’m doing what I already do and using that energy toward issues I care about. For Sublime Stitching, that means helping people suffering mentally, emotionally (and financially) due to at-home lockdowns during COVID or other hardships, and supporting Black Americans and disadvantaged families through established organizations. I have two quotes and affirmations that I always come back to. The first one is a Rumi quote that I believe Florence Scovel Shinn has also used in her teachings which is; “What you seek is seeking you.” For all the doubt we are prone to experience as humans — it’s a potent reminder that there is a reason for the desires, goals and aspirations of your heart. This quote reminds me to surrender to, embrace, nurture and love the deepest parts of myself. The other quote I love is from Anais Nin: “Each friend represents a world in us, a world possibly not born until they arrive, and it is only by this meeting that a new world is born.” This quote speaks to the idea that friendships are more than just relationships, they are acts of creation, where new possibilities are unearthed. There is ALWAYS another way of looking at things. This quote is on the tip of my tongue in everything I do. When a four alarm fire destroyed everything we owned on February 2, 2020, we rebuilt with our community’s wonderful support. I could have cried, lamented and gnashed my teeth – I chose to get into action. Five months later, we have a new vibrant Career Success Center and a separate wonderful donation center. We have rebuilt!! Read more>>

My favorite quote is, “There will never be another you.” I think this is so important in business (and life in general) because we can sometimes get so caught up in doing what other people are doing that we lose our sense of self. There is only one of you. No one can do things the way you can. You might as well use your creativity to its fullest and give the world everything you have to offer. It can be easy to get discouraged and feel like no idea you have is unique, but the thing is, the fact that you’re doing it your way is unique in itself. Believe in yourself and rejoice in your uniqueness. Your work is worthwhile and special! Read more>>

When I was younger this concept of limiting myself stuck with me. “You can always do more than you think you can” is a John Wooden quote that stood out. We are so used to limiting ourselves, we’re not always aware of it. Once I broke down the barriers of “Can I do it?,” “Am I going to succeed at this?” or “No one else in my life is doing it, so am I making the right choice?” I learned what I was capable of. Even beyond that, I learned I can do more than I know. Every time I travel and some insane thing happens, I make a mistake, or go through a difficult time in my life I am reminded of that. I survive, and to take it one step further, I grow and build myself up. I thrive. I’m always surprised at what we don’t know we are capable of, but that’s kind of the beauty in all of it, I guess. We don’t actually know until we take that leap of faith. Read more>>

My favorite affirmation is that behind the scenes the universe is already working on making my dream come true. In times when it feels like nothing is moving this is very comforting and reassures me that I can always trust in divine timing and the support of the higher realms that are working for each single one of us achieve our goals. I came across a quote by Audre Lorde in 1993 – the year I arrived to the US from the quickly-disintegrating Yugoslavia – and it’s been my go-to in difficult times ever since: ““When I dare to be powerful—to use my strength in the service of my vision—then it becomes less and less important whether I am afraid,” The reason why these wise words by Lorde speak to me is because they remind me that fear is a perfectly natural feeling and, at the same time, they give me a push to follow my vision and act on realizing it despite the fear. My life’s path to this day involves an extraordinary amount of risk: learning how to deal with fear, an intimate companion of risk, has been essential . To me, Lorde’s quote underlines the importance of having courage, a character trait I prize above all others. Read more>>

In 1999, Norman Jewison had his moment on the national stage. For a few minutes, he was given the opportunity to express his gratitude and share his thoughts on earning the Irving Thalberg Lifetime Achievement Award at the Oscars. I remember watching on a nearly-square tube TV in a small apartment in Massachusetts. I was a high school kid, still relatively new to the passion of filmmaking. And as I watched, Jewison turned to me and said through the airwaves, “just find some good stories”. The simplicity of it struck me. Is that all it is? Is that all it boils down to? I have yet to see evidence to the contrary. I’ve spent the two decades since that Oscar broadcast seeking out good stories – as a filmmaker, a screenwriter, and now a graphic novelist. Read more>>

Julie Bayer Salzman | Filmmaker & Mindfulness Educator

The mindfulness teacher Jon Kabat-Zinn wrote: “You can’t fight the waves, but you can learn to surf.” To me this idea is critical if we want to live our lives with some grace, fun, and fluidity. Change is constant, we know this. Life is constantly changing! And yet, despite our knowing this, so often change is a source of stress for people. Why? Because we like consistency, predictability, routine. So it’s like we’re in conflict all the time between the ideal and the real. We get tied to this notion of things needing to be a certain way so that we can anticipate what’s next – we can PLAN for it – so we can succeed at it. As Westerners. we equate “success” to “winning” as opposed to success being more a matter of one’s state of mind. Read more>>

“The student can’t wait to become a master. The master knows she/he will always stay a student.” Author (to me) Unknown For so long I thought I wasn’t good enough or smart enough and had to be perfect bevor I dared starting any business of my own. This way of thinking kept me small and stopped me from going for my dream. My favorite quote reminds me that it is never about perfection and that gives me strength to keep on going on the days when my self-doubting voice comes up. Read more>>
