Bo Barrett | Film Director

“FUCK EVERYBODY!” Whoa! Aggressive, Bo. Yes, but necessarily so. That’s an affirmation? It sure is. I had spent a decade doing what I was “supposed” to do, listening to advice, listening to negativity, trying to carve out some sort of creative career for myself. And it wasn’t going well. I was at a breaking point. The walls were closing in. Out of nowhere the little voice in my head who does always seem to know best, screamed FUCK EVERYBODY! Read more>>

I think these days the quote “Perfect is the enemy of good,” resonates with me, for most of my life I would strive for perfection as if it were an attainable goal. I always would tell myself “I’ll wait til I’m better, Im not ready yet,” but if you wait til you think you are ready, you may never actually reach that point. It is important to go out there with the skills you have. It gets harder as you improve because you have a standard to uphold. But you have to have the same fearlessness of failure as you did when you began whatever it is you are doing. Read more>>

I have several favorite quotes, but one that is especially meaningful to me is: “The story is more important than you are.” This quote is at the core of everything I do creatively, and it’s something I heard many times from my late acting coach and mentor, Harry Mastrogeorge. What this quote means is that whoever you’re portraying in the story is who you are—my (Nina’s) opinions about the story don’t matter. There is no “Nina” in the story. This quote grounds me and keeps me focused on being true to the story—whether it’s a commercial, film, TV, or stage—rather than worrying about everything else around me. Read more>>

Shay Hayashi | Musician (Drummer)

“Man cannot discover new oceans unless he has the courage to lose sight of the shore.” -André Gide I have always been a creature of habit. Familiarity brought me comfort. I spent my childhood in a small Saskatchewan prairie town that I hold deep in my heart. But comfort kills creativity. The scariest thing I have done in my life was uproot. When I decided to move to Los Angeles to pursue music, I couldn’t tell if I was excited or scared shitless. Perhaps the uncertainty of that was a good thing, courage is a mixture of bravery with a hint of stupidity. Read more>>

A mantra I’ve recently adopted is “guide and be guided”. In my art and in my life, I often feel conflicted, torn between two options. After all, to live is to create, and creating is all about making choices. It’s hard not to feel like choosing the “wrong” option will be the end of the world. It’s hard not to feel like “my body” is telling me to do one thing while “my mind” disagrees. So what I like about this mantra is that it reminds me of my agency. The ability to choose can feel like a burden, but it’s a privilege. In reality there are infinite options, not just two. Giving space to hear out all sides (rather than deeming one “right” and one “wrong”) allows me to create options and ultimately make a choice I feel resonates with the complex aspects of my being. “It is our choices, Harry, that show what we truly are, far more than our abilities” ~ Albus Dumbledore. This cliche quote from my all-time favourite book series holds a lot of meaning to me. It shows how life isn’t just about our external achievements and capabilities but also about our internal consciousness, ethics, morals, and judgment and what we choose to do with those abilities. Our decisions reflect who we truly are at our core, especially when it comes to doing the right thing, even when it’s hard. Read more>>
