“The minute you start caring about what other people think, is the minute you stop being yourself.”  — Meryl Streep I love this quote, and I try to apply it to all the areas of my life, but mostly in my creative process. Caring what others might think of my performance or me as an actor only feeds the whisper of doubt inside of me, creating a cacophony of insecurities that hinder my imagination and limit my creative potential. Most importantly, it stops me from enjoying the process and the journey of discovery. I stop having fun. Read more>>

A quote I keep pinned up in my studio is from Donald Barthelme, a postmodern writer from the 60s and 70s: “Not-knowing is crucial to art, is what permits art to be made.” It comes from an essay titled “Not Knowing” in which he describes the value of creating art from the inside out, using spontaneity, invention, and discovery as your primary tools rather than working from a concept, outline, or declared set of intentions. I use this quote as a kind of reset button each time I start a new work or project. My impulse is to over-conceptualize, over-plan, and mentally rehearse a piece to the point that actually bringing it to life feels unadventurous and oversimplified. Read more>>

My favorite words of affirmation and quotes change between varying Black Feminist poets, authors etc. However always consistently on my heart are the words of Octavia E. Butler, “All that you touch you change. All that you change changes you. The only lasting truth is change. God is change.” These words hold me in my truths to evolve and be in transformation with my body, community, and environment. I am reminded of the cyclical impact and necessary adaptation required to trust in unknowns and continue in this life! Read more>>

One of my favorite quotes is “Make peace with your broken pieces.” I struggled with acceptance and anger a lot as a child. Not really knowing how to sort out the feelings of guilt, shame, and helplessness. I experienced abuse when I was younger and following that, every mistake or every raised voice from an adult seemed to deepen my cracks leaving me feeling broken and empty. Read more>>

In Conan O’Brien’s closing monologue of his final Tonight Show episode, he said, “Please do not be cynical. I hate cynicism. For the record, it’s my least favorite quality. It doesn’t lead anywhere. Nobody in life gets exactly what they thought they were going to get. But if you work really hard and you’re kind, amazing things will happen.” That’s been my mantra ever since. Work hard. Be kind. Whatever’s meant for me will come in time. Conan’s long been a hero of mine. He’s renowned for taking his silly seriously and always remaining grateful. Read more>>

I don’t remember where or exactly when, but a few years back I read a quote that said something along the lines of “The danger comes when our need to belong outweighs our ability to question.” This relates to me more than just when it comes to creating, I think in general it is a good thing to remember. But when it comes to art, I’ve made many decisions based on the want to belong. When I was eleven years old I had already decided I wanted to work in animation. Read more>>
