We had the good fortune of connecting with Alex Ponce and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Alex, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
As a child I found myself constantly building scenes in my mind. I would recite lines that I would hear on the movies I would watch and act them out at school with me peers. of course, they would look at me like I was crazy but I didn’t care, I was stuck in another dimension. When my aunt would visit from Mexico she would bring her RCA camera that took VHS tapes and she would hand it over to me so that I could film anything I wanted on it. She would take the tape back to Mexico and my family would have a ball. It was then that I knew I had a talent for entertaining people with my creativity. As I grew older my passion for movies, filming and cameras just grew more and more. I was 19 when I invested $300 into Hi-8 Sony Handycam. I filmed short films with my friends and got a gig with a local band to film their performances on the road. I was submerged into a creative world and I was hooked. As the years went by and I got better at my profession I realized that the only place where I could thrive and feel alive was in a creative environment. I don’t do well in places where there isn’t anything artistic or creative.. I just don’t feel it.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I believe in leaving it all on the table, again in Spanish I use a phrase that says, “Tira toda la carne al asador”, which means give it all you got. When I film for a client I do my absolute best and give it my all. I love seeing people smile when they see the end result of their video. I learned that you never stop learning in this business. Always be kind, listen and never be cocky. be polite and work hard is my motto. That is the best advice I can give someone. People can see phony, and there is a lot of that now a days. I want people to know that the love for what I do has kept me alive and anytime I am out filming and creating I am in a trance. Region Entertainment is Alex Ponce. There were times when I found myself lacking creativity and I felt uninspired, but then I would remember all the people that I made smile with my art and I would regain my spark. Never give up.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I would take my friend out to Manhattan Beach to tan and boogie board. After that we would enjoy a pitcher of beer and a few slices of pizza at my favorite spot. I love Cigars, so smoking a few Alec Bradley stogies accompanied by Mezcal would set the tone for conversation. A quick visit to the book store would also have to be thrown in there. I believe that reading is such a powerful tool that we overlook. Communicating should be beautiful, it should have flair and interesting words and what better way to refine that tool than reading. Lastly I would head out to my friends ranch out in Hesperia. Horses, wind, laughter and bonding is necessary for longevity. My best Friend Benjamin Monarrez is out there, hmm I forgot to shout him out in the last section, I hope he doesn’t get mad at me, haha.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My mother is my source of encouragement. She has been my strongest support system, I love that woman with my entire soul. My early mentor Axel Ledezma who I refer to as “El Maestro” he is a person who helped me tremendously early on when I was learning how this business worked. to this day he remains a friend and someone I admire. Another ally in this business is my friend David Valencia from Deep Sail Media, he is one of the hardest working people I know. I call him “El Technico” which translates to “The Technician” in Spanish. He is efficient, savvy and one of the kindest souls I know. Lastly the book that inspired me and filled me and taught me a thing or two about resilience and grit is, The Dark Side of Fortune. It is Oil Tycoon Edward Doheny’s Biography. I was blown away by his story and his tenacity. I also Thank God, for giving the privilege of being able to be a part of this creative world.
