We had the good fortune of connecting with Allayah Beamon and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Allayah, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
Risk is a word I have incorporated into my life because, I have learned without risk there are no results. Whether that was in education, relationships, or business; taking risks is very important to me and I have reaped the benefits of doing so. Risk can often scare people because it challenges them to vacate their comfort zones, and delve into uncomforting ones. On the other side of risks, there are victories that we often miss because we allow ourselves to get in the way of our own success.
From childhood, I saw my mom take many risks. She became a business entrepreneur who made it possible to raise three girls on her own, pay a mortgage, pay off multiple cars, afford a nanny, and maid, and took on on lavish vacations. She could have kept her job at the bank where she had a secure bag, but instead she took a risk on her talent and gave being a hairstylist a run for its money. She opened two salons and operated them for 18 years total. “The risks led to results and the results led to rewards” She is one of the first female entrepreneurs in her family and still is today.
In my life, risk taking plays a huge role. I believe starting my business and fully committing to my business was a risk in itself. I was a new mom at the time and newlywed and did not have anything to my name. I was recovering from surgeries and numerous illnesses. When I eventually got a job I worked there for a year and I QUIT, at the height of the (COVID-19) pandemic. I walked right into HR as they were doing budget layoffs and I asked the director to add my name to the list. Her jaw dropped in shock because I was one of their greatest employees. I knew God was telling me to fully commit to A1 Academic Success, LLC but I didn’t know what the outcome would be. I quit June 20, 2020 and by July 1st, 2020 my tutoring company had over 50 new enrollments. Our client growth was up 80% and we were earning double digits in our monthly gross.
I couldn’t believe my eyes. Paypal couldn’t believe it either; they flagged our account numerous times for outrageous growth in sales. If I never took that risk of trusting my vision and business then I wouldn’t have been able to see the results, that now have led to rewards. We have a 95% success rate, private schools acceptances due to high test scores, students growing in confidence, and dozens of happy parents. More often than not, RISK is worth taking. You heard it from me, “The risks lead to results and the results lead to rewards!” That is a quote I originated and it is a fact!
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
A1 Academic Success provides mobile & virtual one-on-one private tutoring in all subjects. We strive to enhance our student abilities by taking time to teach them valuable tools in their academic work which can be utilized as they progress through school. Our program is designed to go beyond the initial call of duty as tutors and build relationships through mentoring.
I am most proud that I am a young black, professional who is educated and I have a tutoring company that benefits everyone; (THE TUTOR, THE PARENT, AND THE STUDENT). Its all about helping families in the end. Also that we were able to sustain business and have extreme growth in enrollment and profit at the height of a pandemic.
I worked as a personal/executive assistant to many celebrities and successful people whom I learned and studies under during college and after college. I learned to be great at communication with customers, always find a solution to your problems, and be punctual. No it has not been easy but to only have been in business for 1.5 years I would say that the hard part is of the past, and now success is in the future.
I learned to not take on too many tasks at once and don’t lose a customer because of cost, sometimes we have to negotiate and help clients where they are financially to see results in their children.
I want the world to know that a little black/Native American girl from Compton can be as successful as anyone from Bel-Air. The drive I have is unmatched and I will become a self-made millionaire before I leave this earth. Without risks you can’t see the results and rewards. A1 Academic Success, LLC is expanding to the Inland Empire and San Diego before 2021 is over and we can’t wait!
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
If my best friend is visiting in the summer:
– First go for a morning Hike at Runyon canyon
-Have brunch at Casablanca
-Go to dinner on La Cienaga at the Stinking Rose or Barton G
-Shopping on rodeo and melrose
-Go and have drinks and do hookah at Secret restaraunt in Hollywood, CA
I love to go everywhere so we would go to the valley, Hollywood, urban areas for good burgers, most popular beaches and visit museums. Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would like to dedicate this story to my mom Tawanda S. Evans. Mom you deserve all the credit in this story. Without your bravery and true example of a risk taker I wouldn’t be where I am or half the woman I am today. Your entrepreneurial mindset and energy rubbed off on me and I will continue to make you proud. Taking risk and not failing is the greatest reward, no matter how hard it got, you never gave up or folded. The drive others see in me, came from the seed you planted in me from birth. Thank you for always believing in me and supporting my dreams. We will change the world one scholar at a time!
