We had the good fortune of connecting with Andrea Marcum and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Andrea, what role has risk played in your life or career?
I think taking risks is key. It’s humbling, uncertain and the magic place where seeming limitation feeds innovation. From starting a brick-and-mortar studio in LA, to getting my book published by a major publisher after 10 years of trying, taking people on retreat to places that challenged them to see things in a new way, to now essentially opening a studio again online that has no walls and invites the world at a moment’s notice post-lockdown it’s all a leap. The net appears when the focus is on community — when the emphasis of the creation is on “we” and not “me.” It isn’t instant, there is vulnerability when taking risks that requires us to see it as an endurance game and not a sprint. But that walks us right into the philosophy of the Yoga Sutras– abhyasa (perseverant, consistent practice) and vairagya (without expectation of a particular outcome).
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
“Courage is being scared to death but saddling up anyway.” This quote pretty much sums it up. I’ve been teaching yoga since before anybody knew it might be a “job.” And I have definitely learned on the job. There are so many things I’ve stood in front of scared to death. Becoming a reluctant entrepreneur and opening an LLC in a matter of weeks when I needed to leave where I first started teaching. Handling the debt it took to get out of the lease at the end. Grinding out a book proposal by waking up at 4am to write before clients and classes unsure I’d ever get published. Designing retreats to be educations as well as vacations- encouraging people to travel outside their comfort zone. Pivoting in a pandemic… Creating space is creative space. It takes courage to climb into our saddle and head out into the landscape of something new. We create space in our bodies and minds on our mat, ultimately so that we can embody that out in the world… stretching yoga from our mat to our life. The mission of my “brand” or “business” is to hold space for one another so that we can create ways to stand into our full potential… body, mind and spirit– to saddle up and ride together.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
We would walk… a lot… and with my dog Tippi. Our favorite is to head to Venice and wander down the lagoon to the marina. Another favorite walk is to the park in Beverly Hills where there are turtles and ducks. Since lockdown, Tippi and I have put in some serious miles and discovered parts of our neighborhood we never knew. Because of COVID, it’s tough to know where to go, but La Boheme outside is wonderful. While you’re there enjoying their menu and ambiance you forget that we are in the middle of a pandemic, and pretend that you are in a cafe somewhere in Europe when times were different. An outside workout at Pharos Gym and a coffee from Silverback Coffee in Echo Park are a must too.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My shoutout is to the incredible community that we are growing together at andreamarcum.com during these disparate and difficult times– a beacon of light in the murkiness of it all and I am profoundly grateful. My studio in LA was called U Studio for the Unity and commUnity that built it with me. Now U represents the world as we practice together from Italy, Slovakia, UK, Central America, the UAE, all over the U.S and more. I dedicate my shoutout to Shane, Tania, Eliana, Lara, Miow, LP, Kojak, Mark, Jen, Julie, Suzie, Sarah and all of U!!
