We had the good fortune of connecting with Anthony Ausgang and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Anthony, is there something that you feel is most responsible for your success?
Working with clients well known to the general public. Being associated with them led to greater respect for my own product.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
My work stands out from that of others due to its singular appearance and difficulty to imitate. I deliberately chose a painting technique or presentation that wasn’t being used by any contemporary artists at the time. For example, when included in group exhibitions, I would make round paintings, knowing that everyone else’s would be rectangular or square. At the beginning, I sold my work inexpensively and even gave paintings away so that they would get around and be seen by many different people. I also showed in cafes and restaurants while I was looking for an art gallery. I guess the key was humility, and knowing I could boast later. My brand and my story are all about combining commitment and pleasure… committed to getting the work done and enjoying the process.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I like to show my out-of-town guests the heights and depths of Los Angeles, I take them to see graffiti in the LA River as well as classical music performances. We eat from cater trucks in East LA and restaurants in Beverly Hills. My favorite thing to do is take them to the beach in the mornings and the mountains at night. Hollywood Boulevard is always fun too.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
The band MGMT.
