Meet Becca and Billy Mohler: Musicians & Business Owners

We had the good fortune of connecting with Becca and Billy Mohler and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Becca and Billy, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
We moved down to Long Beach from LA to be closer to our family. We are musicians and have three young children. When we got down here and realized we wanted our children to be taught music by someone other than us we couldn’t find exactly what we were looking for in a music school. Our friends in the area with children were also asking us where they should send their children for lessons and began asking if we would teach them ourselves from our home. We quickly realized the need for a music school in our neighborhood was something we could help solve! When the perfect location, walking distance from our house, became available we knew it was meant to be! We jumped on the lease and it’s been the best decision we have ever made! Now we can share our passion and love of music with our community through music education! Now we have the perfect place to send not only our kids to learn music, but a place for everyone of all ages and levels to come learn music!
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Cal Heights Music is an all ages and all levels music school. We offer online and in person music lessons, private, groups, and specialty classes. We also offer super fun summer programs too! We knew that we wanted to create a music school that was different from the ones we had been to as kids growing up and learning music. We always felt all the music schools we went to as children were very formal, stuffy, and uninspired. We wanted to create a space that was visually appealing, exciting, a place that people couldn’t wait to come to and didn’t want to leave! We wanted there to be fun colors and an emphasis on good design! When you come inside our space for the first time it is Cal Heights Music from the moment you step in till the moment you leave. Down to the interior of the bathroom, each space is signature to our music school! Cleanliness is number one, we wanted to make sure our space was clean, bright and safe! Each room has glass doors, transparency is everything and our open door policy allows and encourages parents to sit in on their children’s lessons or easily see them from outside the glass doors! We are so proud of how our space turned out, it feels good, it inspires student’s, it makes you feel something from the moment you step inside! And while everything ultimately comes down to amazing teachers, topnotch customer service, and building relationships with the community, it never hurts to have good interior design! It’s the cherry on top!!
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Long Beach is unique as it is really small town inside a big city. When you come to Long Beach you learn quickly that everyone knows each other and it really feels like there is a big support for local businesses! People in this community are proud to support small and local businesses! That is truly what makes Long Beach so special and why we love this community. From the water, port, local coffee shops and cafes, restaurants, boutiques, and amazing vintage stores, Long Beach truly has it all! One day in this city is not nearly enough as each neighborhood has something to explore and visit! A personal favorite spot for our family in Long Beach is the El Dorado Nature Center. From the moment you park you feel like you are no longer in a city but instead fully submersed in nature. With over 2 miles of trails, 2 lakes, a stream and nature center to explore it is one of our absolute favorite places to go in Long Beach.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Our shoutout goes to our incredible teachers and staff at Cal Heights Music! Without their passion, love of music, positive energy and dedication our music school would not be what it is! We believe a school is only truly as good as it’s teachers, and we thank them for their amazing teaching! We also want to shoutout to Mike Huntley at the SBDC who’s guidance and mentorship has helped us immeasurably to turn our vision into a reality. We are forever grateful!
