We had the good fortune of connecting with Brock Crockom and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Brock, what do you attribute your success to?
When it comes to success, I believe that mindset is everything.
My first priority is to find the love in everything that I do. Being an actor and musician in Los Angeles can be a very harrowing experience, especially when you are first starting out! It is so easy to think “Well, this isn’t going well, I could have done better at this, I am not where I want to be” and blah blah blah! BUT, While it is important to recognize your own mistakes and shortcomings, you have to believe that you will improve. Believe that you will grow. Love what you do and love yourself above all else. No matter where they are in their journey, I tell my music students that they need to love their voices. Singing is a deeply personal endeavor with infinite challenges and you can only get better by singing wrong notes, so you have to find the love for yourself and your love of the music before anything else.
Secondly, I try to look to the future and manage my expectations. I visualize where I want to be, and the successful road that it might take for me to get there. You shouldn’t expect to be wildly successful in your first attempt of anything, but you can definitely hope for success. You can dream about success, and you can work towards it, but meaningless expectations are a recipe for disappointment. Manage your expectations. If you expect struggle, and keep the love for what you do, the only thing that will surprise you is your success.
Success is a state of mind. Even if others think that you’ve failed, you’re the only one who can make that call.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Well I’ve found that nothing worth doing is ever easy! I have struggled a lot throughout my life, and thinking back on it all staggers the mind, but it is very important to remember where you came from. I am a midwest kid through and through. I learned many hard lessons while growing up in hoods and trailer parks, and I escaped to other worlds through TV, Film, anime, books, and video games. I think what sets me apart is that I was forced to grow up really quickly. I was truly a ten year old who had twenty years of experience haha. However, I feel extremely fortunate to have had such hardships. I learned about priorities at an early age. You take care of those around you. You focus on putting good into the world because you see that it needs so much more of it. When you have so little, and lose so much, you learn to value what is left.
My art comes from a place of love and understanding above all else. I want to fill the world with both joy and empathy, equally. I do not do this for fame or anything like that. I am different because I believe that art, love, and understanding matter more than anything else. I am proud of who I am, and what I have been through. I stubbornly refuse to pursue anything lesser, even at a cost to myself.
I love. I teach. I perform.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Well home is where the heart is, for sure. I love hosting and having those heartfelt reunions without any other distraction. That said, Flappers in Burbank often hosts incredible comedians who provide a great experience every time. Laughter is so important and sometimes they even leave you thinking! Nerdy bars like Guildhall also offer their own forms of community through various board games which makes an especially great experience with friends along.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Well, it definitely takes a village! I’d like to thank my wonderful girlfriend Dayandra de Miranda Leão. She is a true superstar who makes every day shine far brighter. Of course, I would literally be nothing if not for my incredible mother and father, let alone my wonderful grandparents that gave me the gift of life and who support me in all endeavors. Every director and creator who ever gave me the chance to showcase my art and put food on my table through performance may never know just how much it has all meant to me. And sincerely, we would be here all day if I highlighted every teacher that made an impact on me in the past decade. From music to dance to theatre, film, and much more, I owe them for the countless lessons that got me where I am now. Recently, I have had the privilege of studying under Mr. Robert D’Avanzo at his acting studio. He welcomed me to Los Angeles with open arms and a mind full of wisdom. Similarly, Emanuel-Cristian Caraman is a world-renowned tenor that I had the privilege of meeting and studying under for years as I found my voice, just to name a few.
