We had the good fortune of connecting with Casey Dunmore and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Casey, can you share the most important lesson you’ve learned over the course of your career?
To have patience no matter the situation with others and myself.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I am a Los Angeles based music producer and composer for film, tv & video games, known professionally as “Schpilkas.”

In 2004 I established plus4dBu, a boutique music production entity.

I was brought up in the melting pot of NYC and was fortunate to have not only studied classical music but also play around with synthesizers and computers. After moving out to Los Angeles as a young adult, I got into urban and electronic music production. I create diverse styles of music, representing my influences, ranging from rock and hip hop to jazz.

I didn’t know anything about the music business, when I stumbled into it. I started with an unpaid internship at an indy label , and went on to work with major record labels, where I learned the fundamentals of the music business. After a few years on the business side, I decided to take the risk to focus on writing and producing music full-time.

When I started in the industry, I never consciously imagined my music would evolve into the career I currently have. Years of self-navigating, learning about and immersing myself in the music production, publishing and licensing side of things have allowed me to make a living producing music. It comes with its challenges (creatively & emotionally), but when I need to push through, I can reflect on my accomplishments and how far I’ve come along.

I’m extremely grateful to have met a network of trusted friends/peers/mentors, who believe in my abilities. Looking ahead, I want to be a voice that inspires and opens up doors for others in this industry who may not have the “traditional” skills, roles, image or gender.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Since we’re in a pandemic (at the time of writing this) I wouldn’t recommend traveling anywhere and sadly, some favorite locations are permanently closed due to Covid.

Jokes aside, Los Angeles is pretty big and there’s a lot it has to offer.
