We had the good fortune of connecting with Casey James Knight and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Casey, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
I knew from a young age that I didn’t want a traditional job. I wanted to have fun for a living. I know how overwhelmingly privileged that sounds, and I’ve been extremely fortunate to have friends and family who support me. I’m not someone who would “absolutely die” if they had to work a desk job. I respect all workplaces and the people who pursue those paths. But If i could do something that I truly loved for a living, I was going to do it. So here I am….sitting at a desk. But it’s my desk, in my home, drinking my coffee, telling MY cat to get the hell off the keyboard. Both acting and photography require a certain amount of time sitting at a desk. I just wanted the freedom to do it on my own terms.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I am an actor, and I am a photographer. I suppose they both rose up in me as something I’d really like to pursue around the same time. I was always clicking away with my camera when I was a kid, and at the same time I was really enjoying performing. When I moved out to Los Angeles to pursue acting it became pretty clear that the journey was going to be long and hard. So I started using my camera to make ends meet, and now it’s grown into a full on side career. Now I take headshots and portraits to pay the bills, and audition whenever they come my way.
It’s absolutely not easy. There are sixteen trillion people doing the same thing out here, and you have to find a way to stand out. You get told no every single day. And I’m definitely not successful. I’m still hustling and just making things work week to week. Juggling two very financially-insecure careers with mental health, social life, relationships, bills, and the existential dread of what the hell this universe is, is extremely taxing.
All in all I’ve just been learning to let things go. Dwelling seems to be my super power, but it does nothing other than hold you back. Be brave, say yes, do the work, and keep yourself accountable. And water the plants.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
The Getty is my favorite place within the city. I love history and art and architecture, and it has it all. And it’s free… So we’d definitely be going there at least once. I love a day at the beach, maybe in Malibu or somewhere away from the tourists. I’d take them to a flea market or an estate sale to see the really weird shit this city has for sale. Maybe hit West Hollywood, head to a bar downtown, or if the timing is right go see an outdoor film at the cemetery. Most of all we’d get the hell out of the city into the Angeles national forest to hear what quiet actually sounds like.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Shoutout to my parents to infinity and beyond. I’m shouting so loudly that I hope they hear me all the way over in Michigan. There is a big learning curve in both of my industries, and I’ve had to work my ass off learning how to navigate this ridiculousness. But none of this would’ve been even remotely possible without the support of my mom and dad.
