We had the good fortune of connecting with Cheng Guo and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Cheng, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
About the risk, I think it is inevitable if we want to make changes to our life. For me, I strongly feel it before every important decision that I made for my future path. In fact, lots of my anxiety come from the consideration of the decision making because I am so worried about the bad result. That makes me prefer the option which is more conservative sometimes. This reflects to my career and my life. However, after I saw several facts that my friends and ordinary who live positively after crises, and someone get payback by taking risks. I just realized that I was influenced by the fear of risk so deep, and I need to get rid of it. After awaken by others, I hold the opinion that I should consider the potential of the opportunity as the priority instead the level of the risk.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I tell my friends that I am a visual development artist. I would love to keep doing art for the animation industry as an artist because I love it. It is a very difficult journey that full of challenges and uncertainty to join the industry as a foreigner. Initially, living in an unknow environment is the biggest challenge. For some reasons, the media platform of my country reports a lot of negative news of the United State. So, the beginning two years, I live very carefully until I am familiar with the environment here. From current perspective, I might be a little overreact in the first two years. Then, the peaceful life doesn’t stand very long and job seeking becomes my biggest anxious. Personally, I think some good decisions that I made helped me get my today’s job as Visual development artist. Before my graduation, I took two academy years to polish the portfolio and do my best to accept new knowledges, although it is a harsh process. Both factors make me qualified enough to be an entry-level artist in the industry. Meanwhile, I value my last academic year as a student to achieve my thesis and expose my portfolio to studios. I learnt not only rely on create more new works but also actively touch studio is the most efficient way to get a job. Relationship with studios really plays an important role in here that school barely teach us during the class.

I hope reader who is facing challenges don’t give up what you are looking for. Please keep optimistic. If you are interested with my artwork or want to reach out. You can follow my Instagram @gcspice. Feel free to contact or send message to me.

There is country I want to go with friends if I ignore the expensive prices of there. Japan is a good place to have fun. If I have a weeklong trip, I want to go to Akihabar at Tokyo and have lunch at Cat Cafe of there. I love the otaku culture. Ghibil Museum and Hokkaido could be the good chooses to go as well. Can’t wait to know more about the Ainu culture because I recently read a manga called GOLDEN KAMUY.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?

I think there is a person have a great influence on my life. I am still getting influence from him. Osamu Tezuka. He inspired so many artists, animators and famous directors. He is the person influence me as a mentor although he passed away before I even born. Another person I think is not a man in real life LOL. Dr. Black Jake. An unlicensed Doctor who charges huge amount of bill from patient as the top surgeon of the world. He is a character from Osamu Tezuka’s manga.
