We had the good fortune of connecting with Chi Bailey and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Chi, how has your perspective on work-life balance evolved over time?
Since the beginning of my career as an artist I’ve constantly desired to have a healthy work/life balance. and at this point of my journey I see that it heavily depends on how well I understand my role. if I try to be artist and accountant in the same capacity, that can really lay a burden down the line, but of course I have my eyes on the books, so this requires wisdom.

Before anyone has a team, they must run the business themselves, obviously. And unless we lean on God, we will continue to do everything ourselves, even when we have a team! Here’s an example of in my life: I give nonsensical hours to just taking walks, reading scripture, and catching up with strangers because when I step to the drawing board, the complete idea is just waiting for me in peace. That’s a small view of His grace.

A big part of having Work/Life Balance is understanding that you cannot possibly plan everything either. Sometimes you will only know what the next 3 days will hold, or maybe even the next couple of months. Planning too far out can be like speaking on things you do not know. So be patient. I’ve learned to just do the ideas that are standing in front of me and that typically takes me where I was supposed to be. But too much planning makes you “busy”, and you forget about the people you love.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
My company “Chi qc” takes vintage clothing and up-cycles them into new clothes. I call them Born Again Garments, because the lost clothes live again. I handmake all of them myself in Los Angeles, but the goal is to hire more personal hands because I refuse to do business with a sweatshop.

Although my approach is sustainably minded, that’s not the selling point. At my 1st exhibit someone told me “I’m trying to find something wrong with the clothes… But I cant”…. That’s because nothing leaves the shop unless it impresses me. I think eco-friendly art is cool because we’ve all seen a hoodie or “this” or “that” but its just different when its tastefully arranged with rare garments from the past. I’m all for being green and saving the planet, but if it then destroys your wardrobe then what’s the point.

Lets rewind for a second though, before 3 exhibits and my 1st collection, when I landed in LA on April 16th, 2018. I was so low on money I had to pay my first months rent in bitcoin, which was kind of cool. I really lived like a tourist for my 1st year and met a ton of locals that invited me to all types of events where I showcased my art and the name grew from there. it was not easy at first and I was very sad because I felt alone because I was alone. I started reading the Bible that year and it just got better and better after that.

I learned to create out of peace and true direction from God because I began to actually hear him in my heart. I use to just chase goals simply because I could obtain them, I learned that just because a door is open doesn’t mean its open for you, and you need God to know the difference.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I’m going to put y’all on game for the best spots to eat, drink, and just dwell in LA. eating spots first! Dinos Pizza in Burbank is among the best pizza you will find in LA and Raw junkies is probably the best vegan Food in LA. Drinks wise you need to go M-street Cafe and get the matcha with lavender (Macadamia/Oatmilk) or Blue Bottle Coffee and get their toasted matcha with Oatmilk.

If you want a nice view of the city then Go to City Hall in DTLA and ask to go to the top floor and they will give you a free pass sticker. Hike wise its Santa Monica mountains and the view on the 1st summit is amazing. There’s a cafe at the bottom of this hike called “Juicy Ladies” which has some of the best food and interior design I’ve seen anywhere. beautiful. also go and find a VR-Arcade, those are super fun.

I could go on for days but these are a must!

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I started to realize one day “I’m not the only person that moved to LA to build a company” and “I’m not the only one working hard out here”. I realized many other things and understood that the scriptures are completely correct in that “nothing is dependent on the desire or the effort of man, But God’s Mercy”. I see His grace on my hands. So I want to give a big shoutout to God who gave me a wonderful Family, countless talents, His Word, His Son, and His Mercy!!

I want to thank my Mom and family as a whole for raising me. I was honestly blessed to have family reunions, uncles and aunts that loved me, Grandparents, and good friends. I see that many don’t have that and I am thankful I could experience them. Amen.
