We had the good fortune of connecting with Christy Desai and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Christy, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
Starting a new business – or anything new for that matter – is extremely daunting. Most of us immediately jump to all of the things that can go wrong; “What if I fail? What if it doesn’t work? What if I lose everything?” but one day I decided to ask myself all of the things that could go RIGHT. “What would happen if therapy was more visible instead of tucked away in a medical building? What would happen if more people had access to mental health services? What could it look like if therapy was normalized and treated like other wellness services we already know and love like a workout class or massage appointment?” The possibilities are endless and thinking about the ways that Okay Humans could make a meaningful difference by improving the ability to seek help is what gave me the fire to do it. I didn’t have all of the answers, and took solace in knowing none of us do, but I had the passion and drive to pursue it because I needed to at least see what could happen.
What should our readers know about your business?
Okay Humans is a modern therapy practice from the founders of Drybar – we have qualified and diverse therapists with degrees from places like Pepperdine, USC, Smith College, and more.
We’re all about making it easier to get to therapy. Before you even visit Okay Humans, we’ve simplified the process for you. Finding your therapist, booking your session and filling out “paperwork” is all done at your fingertips through our industry-leading app or on okayhumans.com. To take even more of the headache out of the experience, we’re now in-network with Aetna & Cigna to help guests save up to 100% of their session costs. Even if guests aren’t covered by our in-network partners, we’ll submit insurance claims on their behalf so they can still save up to 80% on session costs, without the hassle.
When you arrive at our brick-and-mortar location, you’ll notice we’ve designed a space that makes you start to feel okay the minute you walk through the door – beautiful architecture, a wellness shop, mentali-tea bar and sound diminishing therapy suites to ensure a feel-good experience from start to finish.
We know therapy works. It changes lives and helps people thrive. The magic that happens between you and your therapist in session and the relationship you build together is key in accomplishing that. Our therapists at Okay Humans will provide a framework and a safe space, but there is no right or wrong way for the session to go – the important part is showing up. We make it easier for people to do that, and that’s what I’m most proud of.
The impact that we’re making on people’s lives each and every day is what keeps me excited about building Okay Humans. Building a business is certainly not easy but if you can wake up every morning and know that you’re making a meaningful difference in the world, then it’s worth it. You don’t need to be the smartest, loudest or most educated person in the room to build a successful business. But you do need to believe wholeheartedly in what you’re doing. If you’re doing something you love and something you’re passionate about, the triumphs supersede the trials.
Our long-term goal is to continue modernizing and destigmatizing therapy so more and more people can reap the benefits. We plan to expand across the country to reach even more people and make going to therapy feel okay in every way.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I decided to open our first Okay Humans location in Brentwood because I truly love the community and all of the things it has to offer.
Pizzana and SusieCakes are our neighbors on San Vicente Blvd but even prior to opening Okay Humans these were two of my favorite stops. What’s better than fresh pizza and a sweet cupcake to top things off?
When I’m not at Okay Humans, 9 times out of 10 you can find me at the Brentwood Country Mart. It’s a great spot to take visitors for some local shopping, a star sighting or yummy tacos! Across the street is Platefit which is one of my favorite workouts you can do in less than 30 minutes.
Los Angeles also has great hikes so I always take friends to Temescal Canyon. We get in some nature, some ocean views, some steps and some good convos out on the trail.
For some pampering I love a good facial from FaceHaus followed by a fun drink & dinner at R+D Kitchen!
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I love this! I have to dedicate my shoutout to our OH Team, the Okay Humans therapists who show up everyday because of their belief in our mission and passion for impacting our guests’ lives for the better. I’m so proud and honored to work with this group of humans who have extensive knowledge in the field of mental health and have notable qualifications. Many have been with us since we first opened our doors and continue to remain dedicated to providing quality care in a beautiful space while eliminating the antiquated processes that existed in therapy before us. Our Guest Experience reps are also important roles on the OH Team. These are the smiling faces you see when you walk through our door, or the voice that greets you over the phone. They create and maintain a 5-star guest experience for anyone that engages with Okay Humans and support our therapists to do their best work. I couldn’t have asked for a better group of people to help bring this entire vision to life.
