We had the good fortune of connecting with Constanza Jabalí and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Constanza, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
I am not one to take risks, I like to have a backup plan in most of the things I do, but for some people choosing a creative career is a risk, in that sense it is better to risk doing something that makes you happy, even if it is not easy and requires more work, in the end it will be worth it.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
It makes me happy to be able to work as an illustrator, especially when people smile when they see one of my illustrations. It was not easy to get to this point, drawing was my dream since I was a child, so I clung to it, when choosing a career some people made me doubt my vocation and I decided to study engineering, but I was never happy with that, at In the end I ignored all those fears and went back to fighting for what I had always sought to be.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
We would start with breakfast in a gallery cafe where you can draw while you eat, we would walk through the city center to visit a second-hand bookstore, we could attend a concert by the Symphony Orchestra, go to an exhibition of some of my friends, see a movie at the Film Festival, we would go to a nearby magical town called Real del Monte and visit a mine, get on the truck that gives a tour of the place and then go eat some pastes accompanied by a hot coffee, from there we would go to Huasca de Ocampo to walk in the forest and rent a cabin, in that place we would eat mexican food, on the way back to the city we would finish with a walk along the avenue and go to a bazaar that is set up every weekend.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My greatest thanks to my parents for supporting me and teaching me how to face life, to my grandfather who encouraged me to follow my dreams and be better every day, to my younger sister who is my inspiration and to my couple who encourages me in times when I’ve been about to give up.
