We had the good fortune of connecting with Courtney Carter and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Courtney, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
While I loved working at CAA, I saw a white space in the industry and an influx of emerging talent and lack of suitable management that understood the new and existing media marketplaces. It sparked the creation of CMG–a management and media company that represents innovative and inclusive people and stories, primed for shifting culture and perception. CMG consults and advises entrepreneurs, brands, companies, and talents who are often considered the ‘onlys’ in their spaces; such talents have and include Ghetto Gastro, Liza Koshy, Matt Bellassai, Carri Twigg and Selema Masekela. At CMG, our value system is built to help talent find their purpose, stay true to their brand, and identify how they can create content and brands that shift narratives while serving others.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
When I think about my art – it is undefinable. I could say “I write poetry” (I do!) I could say that I help others define and craft their stories (I do!) I could say that my ability to create connections that build culture is art (it is!)…but in this moment I am compelled to share the idea that my art is my every day. A quote from IN-Q comes to mind as it is truly an expression of why I work with people – it’s an honor to be a part of sculpting and executing the idea that “Creativity doesn’t come from us it comes through us”.

Being a woman in sports and entertainment is not an easy road; but if you lean into the networks of people and ask for help and advisement you will be amazed at the collaborative and mentorship nature of the industry. There are two things that I truly believe in: polite persistence and PPP (the power of picking up the phone) – we are in a relational world/business and we have to speak to one another — many things “shouldn’t be an email”. 😉

Something I would want someone to say about my brand or story, “Courtney was a formidable and compassionate champion for her clients, ideas and the larger belief that if something doesn’t exist – it is the perfect opportunity to create it”.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Oh!

– Sunrise walk and talk in Playa Del Rey with coffee from Playa Provisions to cap it off
– Drive up the PCR and grab a Lobster Roll from the side of the road while listening to LANY
– Grab an acai bowl and go hang at Point Dume
– We’d definitely check out some gallery’s of the emerging talent
– Check out the new women’s professional women’s soccer team Angel City FC!
– Check to see if Yachtley Crew was playing and buy tickets immediately!
– Do some shopping, hit up the Fairfax Flea – La Brea and Melrose
– Hit up Nice Guy for some Friday cocktails and vibes
– Hike Temescal Canyon or Griffith Park (cause we know Runyon isn’t a hike)
– EAT OUR FACES OFF (Bee Taqueria, Alta, Playa Provisions, Bodhi Thai, Nobu & Sugarfish and ANYTHING Nancy Silverton MOZZA, Chi Spaca, Highland Park Pizza etc)
– Go to Mosaic – nothing like Erwin Raphael McManus and worship with MSC to round out the week

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My S/O goes to so many! I’ve been lucky to have learned from so many women and men within the industries who created space for me to make my crazy ideas come to life and serve the peers and people I strive to create space for. It’s easy – my Creator God and my mom, dad and brother. I had the most supportive family that always encouraged, supported and believed in my crazy ideas. Without you all it doesn’t make sense!
