We had the good fortune of connecting with Del Howison and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Del, what role has risk played in your life or career?
I’ve always lived with risk. I’ve been in some precarious situations, like life and death. So when it comes to business you do your best and either it works or doesn’t. You live with that which is easy to do if you approach it that way. If it doesn’t work you just try again. I was taught to never worry. If there is something wrong and you can change it then change it and quit worrying about it. If you can’t change it there’s no point n worrying since there is nothing you can do about it. But in reality there usually is something you can do about things even if it helps a little bit.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
My store and brand Dark Delicacies is 26 years old this year. My wife and I put in a lot of sweat and learned a lot along the way. But thank you to everybody else who touched us and made us succeed. We couldn’t have done it alone. In my writing I was able to get published with some luck (that kind of works out that way for most of us). The talent kicks in when you get that shot. I have been nominated for and won well over a dozen awards. I didn’t do that on my own. I listened, read and wrote. I used the plant button chair. What’s that, you ask? “Plant Butt in” chair and write and don’t stop until you reach your goals. Ignore your doubts, worries, and fears. If you don’t try you’ll always fail
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Who knows? With this pandemic everything is changing. There’s no telling who or what is standing when this whole thing is over.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
In my shop’s success starting with my partner and wife, Sue. Then Horror people like Clive Barker, Ray Bradbury and Ray Harryhausen who have supported the store from the very beginning. But mostly the fans who have become patrons and supported the Dark Delicacies As far as writing goes, like the store, there are to many to mention but I’ll say Jabberwocky Literary Agency, Editor/Friend/co-conspirator Jeff Gelb and author Joe R. Lansdale. The entire writing community has been super.
