We had the good fortune of connecting with Deonna Marie Cattledge and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Deonna Marie, where are your from? We’d love to hear about how your background has played a role in who you are today?
When someone asks me where I’m from I would typically say the Cosmos, but I’m from Grand Rapids, Michigan and I would say that I had a very traumatic childhood. I had two parents on drugs which put my sister and I in foster care for a good portion of my childhood. So I was in various types of homes whether it was one of my aunt’s house, a group home, or another home in the foster care system. In some of those homes, I experienced sexual trauma, emotional abuse, and/or physical abuse which attributed to me later fighting my own drug addiction. For a big portion of my life, I never felt like I belonged anywhere.
No one ever saw me because I was never in a place long enough for anyone to see me. Nobody had time to cultivate who I was or my special gifts. So I had to recognize that I had them and cultivate them on my own.
My upbringing has made me fearlessly go after the things I want in life. Most people are afraid to quit their 9-5 jobs to start a business or follow their dreams. They want to plan it out and see the outcome. I didn’t have that luxury, so I just did it. I’ve never known the outcome ahead of time so I don’t let that fear and uncertainty stop me. It’s what I’m used to and I definitely see it as an advantage.
Please tell us more about your art. We’d love to hear what sets you apart from others, what you are most proud of or excited about. How did you get to where you are today professionally. Was it easy? If not, how did you overcome the challenges? What are the lessons you’ve learned along the way. What do you want the world to know about you or your brand and story?
I am an Intuitive Vocalist and a Spiritual Healer. The voice is a very powerful and magical tool and when combined with healing it can be incredibly freeing. I use my voice and intuition while performing to brand the souls of my listeners and I help other singers and performers to do the same.
I am a classically trained soprano and I sing multiple genres of music. What sets me apart is my refusal to be placed in a box. I love singing many styles of music and I do just that. I sing beautiful arias, lieder, and art songs, while also singing R&B, jazz, and acoustic soul songs. If my soul connects to it, then I sing it. I’m excited about a meditation and manifesting EP I will begin working on soon.
My specialty lies in the feelings behind the notes…it’s even the motto for my studio, “It’s a Feeling, not a Sound.” It’s less important to me what I sound like versus how I made you feel. I don’t seek perfection, I seek connection and transformation. When I sing a song, I have connected deeply with each note so that I can portray these feelings while performing, inviting the audience to take the journey with me, therefore branding the souls of my listeners.
My first voice teacher told me I was an opera singer, it was not something I was initially interested in doing. He called me a “diamond in the rough.” That is how I began studying voice, classically. After graduating with my bachelor’s degree, I was diagnosed with a vocal cyst and had vocal surgery. This silenced me for years and during this silence, my spiritual awakening began. During this silence I connected with myself on a deeper level than I had ever done before and was able to work through so many of my own past traumas. Through my full recovery, I studied and learned so much about vocal health that I became an expert and eventually began helping others to create and restore healthy voices. In order to unlock the voice so many of my clients needed to deal with traumas that caused or reinforced the vocal blockages in the first place. I learned that more than not, the vocal blockages others carried were due to other factors in the unseen.
Know that you are never alone and you are being prepared for what you are to have. Life experiences are worth more than the most prestigious degree you could ever get. You have to be prepared for where you are going. Life and your unique journey will help you to do that. I want people to know that if you dream it, you can have it. Regardless of what you’ve gone through or what you are going through, focus on your heart’s desires and let them lead you. You’ll get there, however, long it takes, you’ll get there. If I had to sum it all up in one word, believe.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc. In your view what are some of the most fun, interesting, exciting people, places or things to check out?
Brunch at La Baguette
We would definitely have brunch at La Baguette, which is a very cute french cafe that serves the most delicious strawberry jam with baguettes with every meal.
Spa Day at Fourth House an Alternative & Holistic Health healing service
Fourth House offers Alternative & Holistic Health healing services. We could get gua sha facials and a manicures, I’ve had both and each time I left feeling transformed and energetically charged up. They also offer reiki energy healing and crystal massages.
Shopping at Craig’s Emporium
This is one of my favorite places to shop for crystals, books, cards, jewelry, smudge kits, and all kinds of other magical little trinkets. I find myself lost in all of the interesting things while visiting the store.
Nature Walk – Will Rogers Gardens
I love going on nature walks just talking and connecting with the beauty and wonders of nature. This has become one of my favorite things to do to just relax. We have several beautiful botanical gardens and parks to explore, but my current favorite is Will Rogers Gardens.
A Cup of Tea at Cous Cous
Cous Cous is s small mediterranean diner that has a delicious cup of tea. We could sit and chat over tea and even explore different tea houses to buy loose tea. I keep tea in the house at all times and I love a warm cup of tea at night before bed.
I LOVE to shop, especially for heels, and makeup, my other passions in life.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
That’s a no-brainer, Elizabeth Spencer, my best friend, my business partner, and the love of my life. It was her and her family that showed me what family looks like, feels like, and means. It’s the first time I had experienced unconditional love. She basically stopped her college studies to sit beside me in my classes. She taught me that I can learn, and then taught me how I learn. She helped me through community college and my bachelor’s degree. By the time I was in graduate school I was cooking with gas, making the dean’s list and all.
Have you ever met anyone that stops their whole life to put you on the correct trajectory of yours? It doesn’t happen. Out of all of the schools and universities I have ever attended, and there have been over 20, she is by far the best educator I have ever had. People say that about me now, and they don’t know I had a secret weapon.
It’s been 17 years and she continues to support me, encourage me, wipe my tears when they fall, and pick me up when I want to give up. She loves me without judgment and without conditions and because of that, I am who I am today.
