We had the good fortune of connecting with Dj Alize and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Dj Alize, what role has risk played in your life or career?
Risks are just mental calculations.. From hypothesis to truth. Nothing is proven true until you execute. My whole career is based on risking my time and energy to create a lifestyle I’ve always envisioned. What type of headaches do I want to deal with on the daily? How will this benefit my personal goals & types of conversations I want to have with like minded individuals. I LOVE getting inspired from people in my circles.
I’m fortunate to say that my time & energy paid off in my home city of Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. From DJing, managing nightclubs transitioning into a full time Radio Announcer & Mix Show Dj, I had achieved my goal of being a major entertainer in my market. I was overbooked to the point I had to create a Dj agency and start scheduling Djs. At which point, I hit my ceiling in my city.
Which lead to my biggest risk, moving to Toronto. A risk I took 3 years ago, which started paying off about half a year ago.
What should our readers know about your business?
My business is very unconventional. It takes a long time to achieve success in any trade, let alone the entertainment industry.. but I’m REALLY excited for the future. The seeds I’ve planted after years of being in Toronto have now blossomed, and I’ve been seeing the fruits from my labour. To top off this “pando” keeping everyone behind their computers, I’ve been able to expand my network exponentially.
After achieving success in my home town Edmonton, I realized I can be the best Dj in that city, but nobody is trying to shed light on me. Nobody was trying to shed light on amazing Canadian Dj’s at all. I saw an opportunity to create conversations with like minded individuals. I moved to Toronto to connect with key people of the industry, and create opportunity for Canadian artists. Now because of my skill set as an artist, I can tell who is REALLY talented, I decided to use my blueprint in Edmonton on a Canada wide scale. Be yourself, and let time do it’s thing. My routine was pretty simple.. Go out and be a socialite (before the “pando”), then come home and work hard behind the computer.. 5-7 days a week. The network kept expanding and kept creating opportunities for myself and others.
One thing I’ve realized after the many years of doing this. I am the business. My people skills allow me to open doors and build true friendships along the way. I started as a Dj, but I am now an agent, a manager, a producer, an editor, a comedy writer for shows & advertising, motion graphics specialist, a music distributor, a program director, on top of hosting shows on Twitch, which comes natural because of my 6 years in radio. One of my shows happen to be with 4KORNERS (Official Dj of The Toronto Raptors) called “What’s Next?” every Thursday at 8PM ET. Twitch.Tv/4KORNERS #ShamelessPlug
I have my hand in a lot, but they all work with each other in some way shape or form.
Foreign City Canada – Partner/Director/Marketing (Full Time)
Foreign City was a leading Dj Agency before the “pando” hit. I was working as a Dj for them when in Toronto. After I moved back to Edmonton, they saw some content I produced which caught their eye. From then, I’ve worked hand in hand with the boys Lincoln Baio & Nathaniel Ramta to transition them from a Dj Agency based in Toronto, into an artist spotlight platform across Canada. With an amazing response from the Dj community, being united Coast To Coast.
Love Distro – Co-Founder/Distributor (Full Time)
I always dreamed of owning my own music distribution business. It all came naturally after having talks with key players about it. I had always found these amazing artists who didn’t have the proper support they needed. I’ve always tried to help people “get where they need to go”. This company was not supposed to launch until January of 2022, little did I know I predicted wrong. We had some amazing artists come across our plate who had amazing success/accolades which would allow us to receive a positive response from the people we were sending to. The artists & music I’m dealing with is amazing. We are very select with who we work with, based on quality.
DNA Creative Inc – Co-Founder/Producer/Agent (Part Time)
DNA started off as an Artist Management company which is now a creative agency specializing in Music Videos, Digital Art, Motion Graphics, Creative Treatments & Music Marketing. I was heavily involved in the foundation of this company, I’m familiar with all moving parts. I operate on select projects with DNA & business development when needed.
FILMR Marketing – Co-Founder/Design Manager (Part Time)
Still on the very early stages of this business, but road’s have led us here. There’s no point in possessing the art/talent, if you can’t market it to the world. Mostly overlooking designs & marketing material when needed. While learning the business as it grow’s, through my business partner Jibs.
Dj Alize – Talent (Full Time)
I’m a walking brand. On top of everything else I manage, I also have to manage my personal brand. Whether it be events or livestreams. I’m a really friendly Canadian who knows how to Dj and laugh at the same time, I think that’s why people like me? I’ve always believed in Music & Comedy merging together in some way, Being a radio host/dj/mc has allowed me to do that. It’s all about being yourself.. and THAT is the KEY to my business.
Everything I’ve ever wanted is now at my door step. I’m really excited to execute when the world opens up.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I haven’t spent too much time in LA, I only had a chance to be there 2 days in between some travel. So let me flip the script and tell you where we’d go in Toronto?
The first place I would take you is Distillery District. I was fortunate to live there for the first 6 months of living in Toronto. It’s a wicked European/Cobblestone area of the city with shops, restaurants, art museums, outdoor art for your ig feed & live music played outdoors. To start our days, we would have breakfast, an amazing Americano, add some classical music & read our books at a place called Cacao70.
For an afternoon adventure, we could easily go down by the pier for a run, maybe hit the CN Tower.. check out the amazing view.. OR.. I’d take us to Kensington Market, an area of the city where every walk of life was roaming the streets. The food, the art, the thrift shopping.. It’s honestly one of the coolest places in the world. I have to give a special mention to Rasta Pasta & Seven Lives Tacos (in my professional opinion.. best tacos in the world)
For nightlife/entertainment. Industry Mondays at Baby Huey’s.. A hole in the wall that had the WILDEST parties on a Monday night. Other places I have to mention.. EFS, Wildflower, Everleigh, Regulars, LoveChild, Thompson Rooftop & Freeplay Toronto.
On a Sunday, we’d take the boat to Toronto Islands, enjoy an amazing walk & lovely restaurant with a view of Lake Ontario.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I’ll start with the 3 biggest inspiration’s that lead me on my path. Sujit Kundu from Skam Artist, Shez Mehra of The 194 Group, and Scooter Braun of SB Projects. After taking time to understand the entertainment industry, I took a strong interest in the people behind the scenes, making things happen!
I have two people I need to thank for their support and mentorship.
Program Director at HOT 107 Edmonton in 2012. I walked in with a positive attitude, a desire to be one of the best radio hosts in our city, and a mental outlook of “if it happens, it happens!”. Needless to say, she took a risk on a guy who never went to radio school, and it changed my life. She trained me how to get a message across, while being entertaining/funny, all within 15-30-45 seconds. She taught me how to be myself behind a microphone, which little did I know.. would help in my day to day dealings with business and people. It also brought success outside of the station with so many people wanting my music & hosting energy at their venues/events. I’m so thankful for the risk she took, because it truly shaped the trajectory of career path. I will forever be grateful to Sara.
My best friend of 20 years, and business partner! The amazing thing about my relationship with Jibs is that we’ve been through so much together & our friendship always held true. There was a level of respect within that, which allowed us to move past “interesting” situations in business. There’s been so much growth from taking risks with each other, and knowing what works for the long haul. We’ve always been adapting our methods and approaches to business that comes across our plate. If I didn’t have another creative by my side, trying to figure out where we need to learn and grow.. I wouldn’t posses the knowledge on producing video content and marketing. For that I am forever grateful to be fluent in the language of content creation, which is crucial in the digital world we live in.
