We had the good fortune of connecting with DJ Hustle and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi DJ, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
It would need to start with a purpose and vision. The idea has to be meaningful to yourself and relevant to your potential clients or customers. This connection is important to the success and longevity of a thriving business. The process should be well thought out. Completing a SWOT Analysis will also bring clarity and direction to the business development.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I’ve produced three albums, “Voice of the Streets: Long Beach”, “Voice of the Streets: Timeless”, and “Voice of the Streets: Reali T”. It has been my goal to produce records and give back to local artists. I also had the opportunity to be a featured on radio as air mixer at iHeart 99.1 KGGI. I’ve also created “DJ Hustle’s podcast” on AppleMusic. I’ve had the privilege to interview artists such Bay Area rapper YukMouth, comedian Ron G, and R & B music legend Marcus Thompson of Timex Social Club. HustleTV has been my “baby” for years. Red carpet events, in-studio performances and private interviews with top stars that include Snoop Dogg, Manny “Pac Man” Pacquiao, Justin Bieber and Oscar winner Common. My most recent project is writing a children’s book about fireworks. It’s on Amazon titled, “4th of July”.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
We’d have a great time. I’d start off in Long Beach. Stop by to visit friends, check out the view from Signal Hill and get some Mexican food from Rivera’s on 7th street Then we’d head south to San Diego’s Gas Light Quarter. Stop in the cigar room, then head to the speak easy. Then end up at the Pendry Hotel. The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
In relation to business, I get my inspiration from books. David Goggins and John Maxwell have impacted how I plan and conduct business. They have also taught about leadership and discipline to achieve my personal and professional goals. Another author is Robert Kiyosaki. He brought understanding to finances to build a stronger foundation for my future.
