We had the good fortune of connecting with Dot McDonald-Saint-Fleur and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Dot, do you have some perspective or insight you can share with us on the question of when someone should give up versus when they should keep going?
Sometimes in the pursuit for your dreams, you will look up and question if you’re doing the right thing. So often we determine the answer to this question by evaluating how closely everything resembles the images we created in our head. This is a false narrative of where your path is actually taking you. Always look at where you started and where you are now. Ask yourself are you further along? What have you learned? Do you want to quit because it’s not happening as quickly as you want it to?
We never know why the detours or turns pop up on our journey, but we have to trust that they are to help us get to the final destination.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Like most actors, there are periods where I haven’t booked anything, so I’m not working. But, instead of sitting still during these moments, I started to take advantage of these moments. I wanted nothing more than to be consistently working, and I didn’t want to wait on other people. So I started making it happen for myself. I started producing my own films.
It wasn’t easy. I come from an acting background, not a producing background. So I was learning about producing while I was doing it. I missed some steps. Did things the wrong way. But I kept giving it a go. And each project got better than the last.
I want the world to know, that I am where I am today because I put my success in my own hands. Bet on yourself. Or no one else will.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I love LA! There’s so much to do. We would definitely start the morning with a hike at Fryman Canyon. I love looking at the beautiful houses on the way up, and when you get to the top there’s a breathtaking view of the city. After our hike we would for sure have to hit up Blue Jam Cafe for brunch. They have the most delicious, flavorful breakfast options. Window shopping in Beverly Hills is always on the list. And listening to the street musicians in Downtown Burbank is always a vibe. Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
This shoutout is dedication to the students and graduates of Howard University. The support, love and encouragement we show each other is amazing. We rally together and go hard for each other. We set the bar high and we never ever drop it. Thank you for showing me who I really am.
