We had the good fortune of connecting with Elaine Barnett and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Elaine, how do you think about risk?
Taking risks has played a huge part in my life and career. I don’t like to live my life with doors closed shut – I like to see what life brings my way when I’m open to new possibilities. I have really only ever taken risks, especially within my career. I’ve tried new opportunities, different avenues within my industry, moved to different states and cities when I didn’t know anyone. All of this, just to see if the door that opened was the right one to walk through and for me, it’s been a great ride. I personally don’t think you can be successful without taking risks and pushing yourself to see what truly makes you happy in life.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
My career has been full of transitions, moving state to state and city to city. I went from studying sculpture, to working at Sephora to traveling the nation as key makeup artist for a headshots company to freelancing as a hair and makeup artist for print, e-commerce, celebrity events and music videos to working within the corporate cosmetics industry to now opening up my own small business on the side. Looking back, everything has been preparing me for where I am in my career now, but it’s definitely been a bumpy ride. Self-doubt would sometimes creep in and make me question if what I was choosing to do was taking me to where I wanted to be. In all honesty, in my mid-twenties, I really didn’t know what I wanted to do with my career as a Makeup Artist and Beauty Expert but I knew that I was meant for more. Instead of living in fear, I have been able to confidently walk through the doors that have opened for me and experience a new way of shaping my career and that’s what I am most excited about.

I am currently going through another one of those transitions in my life. During the end of last year, I decided a change was needed within my career. I was looking for a new opportunity to excel my career path as Education Manager within the beauty industry and after countless interviews, I finally snagged an amazing position at Farmacy Beauty as their Education Development Manager. Farmacy is a “Farmer Cultivated, Science Activated” skincare brand that produces farm-to-face skincare products for all skin types by using locally sourced, clean ingredients. Their love of the planet goes far beyond just caring about what ingredients they use in their products. Farmacy has partnered up with Feeding America to donate 1.5 million meals in 2021 to those in need and have committed to continue donating the next three years. This is why I am so excited to be a part of such an amazing company, doing amazing things – not only for the planet but for people in need as well!

On the other hand, I love to feed my creative side, so I have taken this transition time to start a small business called Celestial Glow Collection. The first launch will feature uniquely scented, natural and vegan soy wax candles that are consciously sourced and handcrafted for a celestial glow! I don’t see it stopping there though, I have a vision for what’s to come in future launches and excited to work on development on the side while excelling my career with Farmacy Beauty! Celestial Glow Collection is something I am really excited about to do within my spare time and have been working on a launch within the next couple of months – so stay tuned and follow at @celestialglowco

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Well, that depends on where my best friend would want to go. I have moved from LA to Orange County to the Highland area, so we would have many options. I could take them shopping in East Hollywood, rent a duffy boat in Newport Beach to cruise on the water or even take a trip up to Big Bear for some fresh mountain air. That is what I love about Southern California, there is so much to do and so many places to experience. My favorite things to do in East Hollywood are hiking the numerous trails available (I know it’s cliche but Griffith Park is my favorite), go get brunch at Millie’s Cafe and then stroll around the Silverlake Farmers Market which happens on Tuesdays and Saturdays. Cinespia is my all-time, without a doubt, favorite thing to do during the fall. They hold outdoor movies where you bring a big group of friends, food and byob, and they have a photobooth decorated with themes of whichever movie they are playing that night. People get really into it and dress up so it’s a fun gathering with a ton of people. Back when movies theaters were open, the Vista and Los Feliz movie theaters were frequent stops and I would definitely have to take them to see a movie there as well. My favorite things to do in the Costa Mesa area is go to The Camp and The LAB Anti-Mall. They are across the street from each other and a very cute, instagram worthy, walkable area with restaurants, coffee shops, vintage stores, spiritual shops, bars and has the most delicious donuts at Good Time Donuts (get the matcha donut – you will not be sorry). Also, you can’t visit Orange County without going to the beach and my favorite ones are probably Crystal Cove and Aliso. My favorite things to do in Highland are to hike the trails near East Highland Ranch, take a trip up to Big Bear for some Apple Annie’s apple pie and go to downtown Redlands for some vintage shopping, bars and cute restaurants.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would not be where I am today in my career without the help from my past boss and mentor, Heather Forcari. You will never meet anyone else like Heather. She is an absolute firecracker with a comedic view on everything and a personality that just shines. She’s someone you want on your team, she’s the sharpest one in the room and she was an absolute breath of fresh air for me when she got hired on as my boss. She became my superior when I needed guidance the most. I knew that I was good at what I did and that I could achieve more within my position at work but didn’t know how to get there. Heather was the one that supported me and pushed me to be my best at what I do and without her I wouldn’t have been able to see what possibilities there were for me within beauty and wellness industry. Heather is what I call “good people” and has turned from a boss to a lifetime friend and I can’t wait to see where both of our careers take us!
