We had the good fortune of connecting with EMPRESS® and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi EMPRESS®, what do you attribute your success to?
I am a big dreamer. My parents always encouraged me to dream and when I was seven years a old they had me write down my life goals… I wrote down three dreams: 1. Ballerina 2. Actress 3. Singer No one in my family was any of these things, I lived in a small mountain town and wasn’t from a wealthy family to give you the resources to make any of these dreams possible. But I believed in my dreams and am so proud to say that I have made all of those dreams a reality. I danced for San Francisco Ballet for eleven years. I was the lead actress in the TONY Award winning production of An American in Paris. I am now a singer/songwriter performing under the stage name EMPRESS. What I’ve learned through the years about dreaming is that as you get closer to your target, it’s important to ask yourself if you are dreaming big enough.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
When people try to put me in a box, I like to blow it up. I have changed careers countless times over the years and never let anyone try to put a label on me. I started out as a professional ballerina in San Francisco Ballet at 16, then acted on Broadway as the lead in An American In Paris, I’m currently a singer/songwriter/composer and I’m in the middle of writing my first children’s novel. I’ve dabbled in tech startups and have started my own record label called Stardust World Productions that supports females in the music industry. I have changed careers so many times and I think being an adaptable artist has made each of my transitions successful. I am proud of my professional accomplishments, and am still dreaming up ways to continue re-creating myself. No one has ever done what I have what I have done, so paving my own path has been challenging. My dreams have always been the light at the end of the tunnel and all I have to do is put one foot in front of the other and keep marching towards it. My whole career felt like I was always waiting for someone else to realize my worth and be “discovered” by someone who could make me a star… Until I realized that I was the one in control over my life and the only one that was going to manifest my dreams was ME. That’s when I decided to become EMPRESS. I finally feel like I am the ruler over my own life and creator over my own happiness. I am now officially the owner of my own crown – which is something I feel like I created through dreaming BIG – and I am not waiting for someone else to crown me, I’ve crowned myself! My goal as EMPRESS is to continue ‘walking the walk’ and inspire, empower and encourage my fans to become the EMPRESS or EMPEROR of their own life. Just imagine what an incredible world we would live in if everyone took care of themselves and took responsibility for the only person we are in control over – ourselves.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Well, since we’re in the middle of a pandemic, I would say I would take them home and eat/drink like a king – at home. I LOVE cooking (I suck at baking though 😂) and am really good at making healthy food and creating some sensational wine pairings. I live in the Bay Area, so would take them out to go hiking on Mt. Tam, or lands end in SF, to wine country, up to my hometown to go skiing in Lake Tahoe (the prettiest place on the planet!) to have oysters in Point Reyes and do some wave and whale watching in Half Moon Bay. If everything was “normal” I’d just take my guest to my favorite spa in the world, the Nob Hill Spa, get a massage, order a chicken pot pie and a glass of rose champagne …that’s all folks.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My mom. She always encouraged me to follow my dreams and believed in me. I am so grateful for her unconditional love. And, my husband and soul mate. He is the most loving and supportive person I have ever met. He’s always by my side and I feel so blessed to be by his.
