We had the good fortune of connecting with Emylee Covell and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Emylee, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
I never wanted to start a business. Afterall, Who needs overhead and payroll and endless stress, impossible margins and sleepless nights… I’ve been coaching for the last 10 years, helping people change the way they move, feel and function through mobility training and bounced around to nearly every gym in Los Angeles providing injury prevention and rehab programs. It’s not so much that I wanted to start a business, I was just zeroing in on my purpose. In 2016 I met my husband and partners and imagined building a facility and system that could house the best of Mechanics, Strength and Conditioning. A place where athletes and newbies could all join in and feel safe in the pursuit of Health and happiness. Pharos Athletic Club opened in 2017 and exists to be a light in your day and a guide for your limitless potential.
What should our readers know about your business?
Pharos Athletic Club is a 22,000sqft facility that’s like a playground for active adults. We don’t believe in dogma or a singleminded approach but rather on purposeful programming and application that best helps the client achieve their goals. We have built the gym , the team and a broad class offering that enables us to deliver on that promise . We are proud on the community and culture we have created . One of understanding , thoughtfulness and good old fashioned hard work . This is our 4th year in business and we have had more challenges and obstacles than we could possibly have expected . From dealing with the city , to unforeseen costs , dealing with rising crime, parking , Covid.. the list goes on …but what gets us through it is our resilience , purpose and dedication to building the best gym in Los Angeles . Our community and staff have stood by us through thick and thin which further strengthens our resolve . Practically we operate under the Pillars of Mechanics , Strength and Conditioning and the principle that improvements takes work in each of these fitness domains . Spiritually, we exist to be a light in your day and a guide for your limitless potential. We would want the world to know that at heart we are a family run business that looks to improve the quality of life of all who walk through our doors . We believe we have helped improve the neighborhood; provided jobs and given people a safe space in which to work on their physical and mental health. We accept the task of helping in this way and hope to spread the understanding that metabolic health is essential for survival in modern times . Our story is one of hard work , purpose, resilience and community … we have fought hard to stay true to our values and face each day with courage as all small business’ must . We will keep fighting and we hope all small business in this City and in this State are given the support they deserve .
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Having lived in LA since 2009, I have nearly 12 years of FUN experiences in LA it’s so hard to choose! NATURE: I LOVE all the secret stairways/hikes in East Los Angeles ( you never know what piece of history you’re climbing up!) Descanso Gardens, Malibu Beach, A Motorcycle Ride down PCH OR Angeles Crest Highway, FOOD: Perch, Maestros, Kiku Sushi, Baby Blues Chicken Wings, Hi Ho Burger, …really any burger… I have lived alll over LA, but find that I keep moving and being drawn to the Eastside vibes. Chill outlook on life, a little more down to earth. Sure LA is known for Hollywood Blvd and The Grove, but I find the “heart” of Los Angeles lies in the Eastside. The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would dedicate my success, growth and impact to every person who’s ever trusted me to help them in their journey. I have had the privilege of working with thousands of people in the last decade of service and I wouldn’t be where I am today without the trust of each and every one of them.
