We had the good fortune of connecting with Eric Williford and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Eric, how do you think about risk?
I make films. So honestly, my entire career is a risk. I’m laughing as I say this, but the truth is, anybody that wants to earn a living by creating art in any capacity is taking a risk. It’s not steady. It’s not easy. Many people in your life won’t understand, but it’s a crazy thing to try and do. You have to be a little insane to pursue it.
That’s why I love it. If it was easy, everyone would do it. It takes a special kind of crazy to earn your living with art. You have to embrace the journey, and find fulfilment when and where you can.
What role has risk taking played in my career? Risk taking is my career. Just joking. Okay, not really.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I make films. But being black, everyone assumes that I want to make social justice movies. The truth is, I’d rather spend my time ripping peoples limbs off in horror movies.
I’m most proud of my dedication to telling the type of stories that I want to make, even though society thinks I should be making other kinds of films.
I got to where I am today by being true to myself.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
When my friends and family come to town, I take them to Roscoe’s Chicken and Waffles. I also make sure to hit all the breweries.
We also make a stop by the Santa Monica Pier and the beach.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I’m dedicating this to everyone who has ever come out and been an extra in one of my project. I’m dedicating this to everyone who has ever come to a screening of my work. I’m dedicating this to everyone who has let me shoot at their place.
This is dedicated to all my friends and family who support me in any capacity. Even if they just ask me if I’m working on anything.
This is dedicated to my amazing wife who is here for all the madness.
