We had the good fortune of connecting with Fiona Lu and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Fiona, what role has risk played in your life or career?
For a long time I have played safe and tried to avoid any high risks I might have. But I came to realize that “risk” is not as terrifying as it sounds. If taking risks meaning to do something new, then I think that is actually the core of filmmaking. I want every story I tell to be refreshing and authentic even though it means that I have to put myself out there and try things that I’ve never done before. It can be very challenging but that’s why filmmaking is so fascinating to me. The result, no matter good or bad, will be a reward for being brave and inventive. I can’t wait for the next “risk” I will take.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
One of my favorite quotes is, from Life of Pie, “We must give things meaningful shape.” That’s basically how I see filmmaking. Filmmaking and storytelling is my attempt to try to make sense of life by giving it a beginning, middle and end. I love the process of creating something new from scratch. It will never become easy no matter how many films I’ve made but if I stay true and authentic something magical will always happen. And the connections with the audience afterwards will become a reward for being true and creative.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I immediately loved LA when I moved here last year and it was all because of the weather. And I love how many museums and galleries there are in the city. You might also find a graffiti by Banksy right around the corner. There’re a lot of artistic areas like Row DTLA. I would recommend to walk around in these areas and be spontaneous!

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
There are a lot of people who helped and inspired me along my path which I’m truly grateful. It is hard to point out just one name but I’d love to thank my mother for being supportive all the time. Whenever I had doubts or disappointment, she was always the one to consult me and encourage me to try new things. Even though she has never worked in the animation or film industry, she was always willing to listen and learn about what I was passionate about. Her love and support is truly unconditional for which I’m really grateful.
