We had the good fortune of connecting with Grant Pearce and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Grant, is there something that you feel is most responsible for your success?
I think the biggest key to our success thus far has been authenticity in our brand. It’s so cliché to say “Be yourself”, but it’s actually a tricky thing to do when creating a brand. For example, it can be really tempting write ad copy in a way that ads are “supposed” to be written, but then you end up sounding like everyone else and don’t stand out. I’m glad I have a co-founder that reminds me to continually create a brand that “talks” the way we do because that’s what resonates with our target market. It also lines up perfectly with the mission of GUY FOX in that we don’t try to be anything we’re not, unlike many others in our industry.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
GUY FOX has been such a fun project to create and grow. What sets us apart is our ability to connect with our target market through our fun, relatable, no-fluff brand. While most fragrance companies sell their products with artsy, celebrity-based marketing (i.e. Johnny Depp shirtless in the desert as a buffalo walks by), we try to focus on how smelling great can make you feel in real life. The journey thus far definitely hasn’t been easy. Breaking into the fragrance industry and partnering with some of the most reputable perfumers in the world took a lot of persistence and a little bit of luck.
I think the biggest thing we’ve learned along the way is problem solving. When you’re starting a business, problems pop up CONSTANTLY. A shipment is late, so your whole production is delayed. The warehouse miscalculated inventory, so now you’re unknowingly selling a product that you’re actually sold out of. It never ends, but there are always solutions and choosing the best solution isn’t easy. So, getting better at identifying these problems and choosing the best solution has been our biggest area of growth.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
GUY FOX is now headquartered in San Diego, so I can definitely give some recs. Places you have to eat: Taco Shop, Born & Raised, Ironside, Morning Glory, and Fortunate Son (among 1,000 other great places). Other than that, you have to catch a Padres game at Petco Park. It’s such a beautiful park right downtown and just off the water.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I think the people that deserve the biggest shoutout from me are my parents! Whether it was my dream of being in the NBA or driving me and my band all over so we could “tour”, they always encouraged and empowered me to go after the things I wanted to accomplish. (To be clear, I didn’t end up making the NBA. Not for lack of trying, just lack of skill, height, athleticism, etc.)
