We had the good fortune of connecting with Halie Nam and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Halie, what do you think makes you most happy? Why?
There’s a lot of things that makes me happy. Probably too many for me to remember on the spot. I like trying new things. I get to learn a lot while trying it out for myself. And by the end of it, I get to show off a new trinket or a neat fact!

But sometimes it gets a little lonely during the process. I recently graduated and I already miss being in a room and talking to my fellow classmates. But then I remember I can talk to my friends on Discord while I work. It’s really exciting showing them my process, when I mess up or when things are going as planned. Whatever happens they’re all really supportive about it! It makes the whole process much more fun. I think what makes me the most happy is having friends to share my neat new stuff with.

Recently I’ve tried baking macarons. It was really fun to make and I really liked sending pictures of my process to my friends, they were so fun to talk to while I painstakingly mixed the batter. The first batch didn’t look all that good to be honest, but they tasted pretty good! I’ve been making more trying to perfect the process. Each time I make I batch I get to share it with my family, but I hope to share some perfect macarons the next time I see my friends!

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My art is…cute. I like cute things, and I think it reflects in the things I draw. I liked drawing magical girl characters, and making comics about chubby frogs with butts. Sometimes it was easier to express myself like that. But I would hear from teachers or mentors that making cute isn’t enough. And I know it isn’t. But that doesn’t mean it can’t be cute too, right? Still, because I was in school to learn I was pushed to change my style to improve. While I can say I learned a lot, for a while it felt like I had lost my passion. Why was I even in school? I didn’t feel like I was enjoying it, or I was going to make it when I get out.

It wasn’t until one of my teachers actually encouraged me to draw in my style, that I remembered why I wanted to draw. I want to draw so I can make fun emotional stories but also have cute little characters! Getting that fire reignited make me more eager to keep doing what I actually like.
Sometimes I don’t feel like I get taken as seriously as others. But I do take my art seriously, because I want people to feel happy when they see it.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Whenever a friend visits I like to make the most out of the trip. Which is really easy here because they have anything and everything. I’d take them to get KBBQ, probably a trip to LACMA, maybe go to the beach or visit an aquarium! Maybe a day to relax and watch the neighbor’s cat sneak into the yard. I’d also want to a theme park, if they’re not from California. I love theme parks, they put me in such a good mood. They’re so expensive though. So I’ll make sure to save some money for the both of us.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My mom definitely. She’s been supporting me ever since I was little. When I decided I wanted to be an artist, she did everything to get me where I needed. And even though things got hard and sometimes a little scary, she would still hold me and tell me it will get better. And I firmly believe it.

After she helped me get into college, she started her own studio to teach other kids about art. Even now she works so hard, and I really just appreciate what she did, for me and for others.

She’s also really fun to talk to. She got into TikTok and I get to share funny videos with her.
