We had the good fortune of connecting with Hilary Hartling and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Hilary, is there something that you feel is most responsible for your success?
The most important factor behind the success of my brand is listening to my audience. From the inception of my brand, developing a brand strategy and implementing it to grow my business, the top priority has always been understanding Who It’s For. As a brand strategist, that’s what I teach my clients and students as well…knowing your ideal client, narrowing your niche and tapping into who they are on a regular basis helps you deliver products, services and experiences that fulfill their greatest ambitions and goals and overcome their biggest obstacles and challenges. You cannot simply know who your target audience is – you have to get to know them, ask them questions regularly, stay in touch with them and LISTEN. When you listen you learn and when you learn you can grow. Implementing what your audience needs most into your brand and business strategy is definitely the single most important element to success.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
My career has always been about moving my audience. That’s why I spent 15+ years marketing movies from Disney, Pixar, Marvel, Touchstone and Dreamworks. I was working with some of the best and most epic storytellers and filmmakers in the world and inspiration was always a heartbeat away. After mastering my marketing and branding craft for the entertainment industry I knew there was more for me to do and I decided creating something of my own, being my own boss, and starting a business to help others do work that inspires them was a vision I just couldn’t shake. Now, I help business owners & entrepreneurs discover their core message, articulate their why and build a clear and cohesive brand with messaging and experiences that move their audience. I love it! What I’m most excited about now is moving beyond just brand strategy with my new Expansion Mastermind – it’s a year long mastermind for entrepreneurs ready to expand their brand, business and life. It’s a way to step into who you’re meant to be, doing work you’re made to do and aligning your energy, ambition and focus to create synergy between your work and life. People come to me to be inspired, to gain clarity and to craft messaging that captivates. That’s what lights me up, and with my support I help people shine.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I’m in a small beachtown community called San Clemente in Orange County, CA, which is halfway between LA and San Diego. If I was showing my best friend a week of good times in my area we’d be at the beach, overlooking the beach or shopping at beach-inspired coastal shops and stores the whole time. From walking the pier in downtown San Clemente to going to neighboring town Dana Point for dinner at Coastal Kitchen and having massages at the Monarch Bay Beach Resort with happy hour drinks on the terrace for sunset over the ocean, my little town will reinvigorate your soul! And that’s exactly why I live here full time!
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
As an entrepreneur, you never walk alone. There are always mentors (who may know they’re your mentors or not), supportive networks & communities and past experience that help guide your way. For me, I’d like to shout out people in these 3 categories as they’ve all helped me create success as an entrepreneur. My mentors include: Brendon Burchard, Gabrielle Bernstein, Amy Porterfield and Ryan Levesque. There are two communities for female entrepreneurs I’d like to shout out: BRA Network for uplifting my energy & continuing support, and Quench Collective for filling up my cup on the regular. Last but not least, the experience I gained while working at Disney Motion Pictures Marketing has allowed me to translate my expertise in brand strategy, storytelling, messaging, positioning, content creation and leadership into my own business and for my clients and it’s been priceless. I love being able to lean on the help I have!
