We had the good fortune of connecting with Jamal Matthews and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Jamal, what inspires you?
Honestly I get inspirations from all directions of life. If I’m angry I dress that way, I make music that way, I play on my emotions to create rather than project that energy towards any individuals. I’m inspired by every day life as this is what I have to live through so why not use it to my benefit rather than towards my destruction. There is beauty in the world that needs to be portrayed and there’s also ugly, either can be interpreted as art depending on the audience.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I am Booku DeBonaire, an artist in totality. I express my art through fashion and music primarily. I am a man of many talents, as my work background is extensive including; salesman, bartender/barback, assistant chef/chef to be, roofing, landscaping work, and I even know how to record and produce a little. My main challenge was deciding what to focus on as my foundation. The music/fashion is what most intrigued me and I created the brand “Black Unicorn” for all the black sheep’s and unicorns of the world. It’s a combination of the two to cater to the “perceived outcast!” I made it to represent individuality and to empower people to embrace being different rather than act as if it’s a problem. It’s been a long road and I’m not finished yet. I actually look forward to the trials and tribulations as they show you the way to success. I’ve learned that there will always be a problem so in return I need to always be open to finding new solutions. Have emotions in business but never let them be the foundation of decision making. Stay true to the morals of your business because that’s what makes your business special. I want the world to know that my brand is a brand that will build confidence and show you that being the best version of yourself is perfectly fine.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Well in Montgomery I’d say we have a lot of hidden gems. I love Eastchase and the downtown area so if my friends were in town we’d most likely hit some of the bars downtown in the Alley(they have a lot of small bars connected to each other or like 30secs away from each other). Also Eastchase is a good place to go for food and shopping. Those are the two locations I go to frequently. We have other gems like El Reys Burito Lounge and bars within close proximity of it as well that are nice hangout spots.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I want to give a shout-out to my family, close friends, anyone who supports my artistic endeavors, and God. Special shout-out to individuals like Sydney Foster whose one of the most dope people I’ve had the chance of meeting as well as a phenomenal photographer. I also wanna give a special shout-out to God because without his grace this wouldn’t be possible. I also appreciate Ravinah Shah for giving me the opportunity. Thank you.
