We had the good fortune of connecting with Jamari Perry and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jamari, how do you define success?
I define success by the people I impact with my work. I measure it by the mark I leave on people’s lives and not the amount of money in my bank account.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I have always wanted to be my own boss, at a young age I had already realized that autonomy was important. After attending UC Berkeley and gaining my Bachelors in Media Studies I decided that I needed more than just my degree to break into the film industry so applied to grad school and by some miraculous event I got into the University of Southern California’s School of Cinematic Arts. After 3 years of education I worked tirelessly to create films that would resonate with a young girl like me that grew up in Northern California wanting to be seen as special. I want people to know that at it’s very core my brand is committed to servicing those that feel unheard and unseen.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Ahhh I love this question, mostly because I love itineraries. My top things to do and places to go are as follows: Monday – Start the week with a trip downtown to the Staples Center maybe catch a basketball or hockey game (if they weren’t in the bubble) or maybe even attend a concert. And of course dine at one of the amazing restaurants in the area. Tuesday – It’s the infamous Taco Tuesday in LA, so we’d go on a taco tour to my favorite taco spots throughout LA (Guisados, Sky Tacos, El Taurinos, World Wide Tacos, El Cholos) Wednesday – LA has some amazing Museums like LACMA, The Getty Center and the Broad but I’d take my best friend to undiscovered black art galleries and museums. I live in Leimert Park and they have some of the best galleries in the city. After enjoying art we could grab some delicious Jamaican cuisine from Ackee Bamboo. Thursday – Every trip needs a shopping day. I’d take them to the Citadel Outlets. I’d avoid the Beverly Center or the Westfield Mall and take my friend to the outlets where there are discounts and plenty of stores to choose from. Friday – Many people fail to acknowledge the beauty and wonders of Koreatown so I’d take my friend to an all night tour of Koreatown. Starting with Korean BBQ, then Karaoke, hookah, and finally spending the night in a 24 hour spa. Saturday – After waking up at the spa, we’d get ready for a beach day. I love Venice, Santa Monica and Malibu but I’d take my friend over to Hermosa Beach to play some beach volleyball, take a dip in the Pacific Ocean and then have some food and drinks at Baja Sharkeez on the pier. Sunday – Sundays are for relaxation and day drinking so I’d take my friend to a day party in the Arts District with a d-jay playing chill music and a brunch menu to die for.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
