Meet Jocelyn Hazen | Jewelry & Fashion Designer

We had the good fortune of connecting with Jocelyn Hazen and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jocelyn, what role has risk played in your life or career?
Typically, when we hear the word risk, we associate it with something negative. the possibility of something bad happening. When I think back to all the risks I’ve taken in life, the end result might not have been what I had hoped or planned, but something good always came from it. Whether it be lessons learned, knowledge gained, new connections, new friendships, or cool experiences, the risks were worth it.
The majority of important career decisions I’ve made have come with some level of risk. After graduating from college, I moved to NYC to pursue a career in fashion design – mind you, without a job secured – and landed a job shortly after arriving. That first job lasted 13 years, and provided essential experience, skills, information and a network of people that helped push me up the professional ladder. After twenty years of living in NYC & working in fashion, and a few years in between at different companies and in different cities, I took another big risk. I quit my 9-5 fashion job, and moved across the country – again with no job secured – to see what LA had to offer. I decided to pursue my love of jewelry, and in 2020, began making and selling my designs at Grand Central Market. Starting my own business from scratch was yet another big risk, let alone during a pandemic, but I took it anyway. Without risk, there’s no reward. A year and a global health crisis later, JBOSS JEWELRY DESIGNS is alive and thriving!

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Even though I’ve been in LA about 3 years, I still feel like I have so much to explore still. Our first stop would be hiking somewhere like Runyon Canyon. We would take a drive along the coast and end up at the beach somewhere in Malibu. Since I live in Hollywood we’d probably stop and look at some of the stars, and would definitely check out a few rooftop bars in the neighborhood. Some of my favorite places for food are Musso and Franks in Hollywood. Their martinis and steaks are unbeatable. Either Canters or Greenblatt’s for some deli. If there was a cool exhibit or concert we would check out one of the many venues in the neighborhood. I’ve really been enjoying all of the farmers markets and small business markets that are all coming back after the pandemic. LA has no shortage of amazing people watching, delicious food and fun outdoor activities to keep me busy for a very long time.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I have a lot of people to thank for their ongoing support in my endeavors. This pandemic has been really hard for most people and having a support system is crucial. My parents and a few close friends have been there for me this entire journey. They have seen me through the good and the bad, and have encouraged me to stay strong through all of these uncertain times.
