We had the good fortune of connecting with Johnny Marcos and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Johnny, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
The thought process behind a starting your own business comes down to creating a solution to a problem. My thought process was all over the place as when I first started, it was out of boredom and intrigue. I come from a family of entrepreneurs, so it was only right to follow in their footsteps! I started Kustom Kontrollerz from my own garage as any start up and figured why not make my own controller at the time, look unique and different from everyone else! I did just that, made something unique and posted it on social media and the reactions were nothing but positive! At that time as well, I had no idea that there was competition and it was something that I was just interested in and over the years, I have learned a lot about the business and the industry I am in and just building a network and a clientele that has helped me build a successful brand!
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
What makes us different than a lot of our competition is that we work 1 on 1 with all of our clients and are able to create works of art that people either use or put on display to show off. We hand-paint and hand craft everything we release and it makes it more of a unique product. I got to where I am with a lot of sleepless nights and hard work which is cliche, but did a lot of networking which is key that has helped open up more doors and opportunities to expand the business. It was nowhere to being easy, there was a lot of trial and error and seeing what people liked and what they didn’t like and how to create something so different that it would stand out! What I want the world to know that nothing happens over night and networking is KEY! Might take you a few years, might take you 10, but as long as its a passion and you can make from it, it will always be fun!
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I mean I live in the City of Angels, so some key spots would definitely be Hollywood and Sunset, maybe even Rodeo Drive and showing them the glitz and glamour that people read about. After that, take them over to Pink’s Hot Dogs or Sal’s Sandwiches for lunch because those are hot spots anytime you visit LA! Another place would be Disneyland as it has always been a childhood staple from my younger days. There’s also taking them to a Lakers game or even watching the LA Dodgers play a few innings. A lot to do in SoCal, that they might need to visit for a month!
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
So as I said earlier, I come from a family of entrepreneurs and one that stands out is my dad. I have watched him over the years running a slew of different businesses and as he is more street smart than book smart which I am, I have tried to learn from how he conducts business and how he runs them. He would be the biggest inspiration, because lets be honest, who wants to work a 9-5? I have taken what he has taught me and what I have seen him do and implement it into my business and it shows! He has taught me how to communicate in a business aspect and how to maximize profits without jeopardizing a deal. A lot of knowledge and skills that cant be taught.
