We had the good fortune of connecting with Juhoon Hong and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Juhoon, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
Pursuing an artistic career completes my way of communicating with the world. Art is a tool to expand my personality that usually doesn’t show in front of people. I use my art as personas but at the same time as my self-portrait. I’m more of a listener and it is easier for me to express myself with something I can take time and craft through time. However, as a listener, I still wanted to share my thoughts and my stories with people. Pursuing an artistic career works perfectly in this sense. It allows me to tell my story to the world while makes me actively engage with other artists. By doing so, I can understand their way of seeing and thinking. This is the beauty of pursuing an artistic and creative career for me.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
My art can be explained with words like comical, creepy, and cute. I have been creating a character with fingers and it basically explains what I love. One memorable story of mine is from the preproduction of my thesis animation. I wasn’t sure if my cute grotesque style of art and story could make it through the faculty critics. So I end up making general and what I thought were family-friendly animatics. Obviously, it was neither family-friendly nor convincing. Faculties knew this was not what I had been making and they wanted me to show what I love. So I used my beloved finger creature design and build a story from it. ‘The journey of a ripped-off finger to find its perfect fit after the nuclear apocalypse’. It was a very different style of visual from my start but faculties loved its somberness and grotesqueness. They knew I was genuinely enjoying the story. I learned that I should always listen to myself and see what I really enjoy as an artist then people will feel it from your art without even saying it.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I always want to give a shoutout to my family. My parents taught me the beauty of this world and encourage me to find my purpose in it. They give me unconditional love which makes me see how it feels to be truly loved. When things get overwhelming I know they are by my side.
