We had the good fortune of connecting with Karen Berrios and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Karen, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
Starting my business was a nudge from God. I had already had my blog for a couple of years, and I was feeling so much purpose from connecting with people who are on their own cancer journeys. One of the biggest things I am an advocate for is using food as medicine. Food has played a big role in my holistic healing approach. I understood that everything I ate could either help heal or harm my body. I am from Peru, and if you know Peru, they have some of the most potent and effective superfoods on the planet. During my cancer healing journey, I included all of these foods as regular staples in the things that I ate. I thought to myself, I should make these superfoods more widely available for people. I should empower others on how incredible these can be for the body. The education aspect is a big component of my brand! I want KB consumers to be educated and intentional with why and how they are using food. I also wanted my brand to be one that is built out of love and trust. I have the farmers and visited the farms where I source my products, there is no middle man. These products are naturally and sustainably made. Going into it, I knew it had to be that way. Food carries energy. And I care about what people put into their bodies. From the start, I knew I wanted my products to have every certification that I personally care about (Gluten-free, raw, organic, vegan, etc) and I told myself anything less was not an option! Through dedication and many prayers, my brand launched and continues to grow each day!
What should our readers know about your business?
Being diagnosed with cancer changes a person. After the initial shock of receiving a potentially terminal diagnosis… after acceptance had set in… a sense of peace came over me. I realized my path in life was changing, and I still had the power to choose and make it a beautiful one. My story is detailed, but one thing that came out of my diagnosis was a firm belief that food is medicine and I can use food as a healing modality. I’m from Peru, and if you’re familiar with my birth country then you know that we have some of the most potent and effective superfoods in the world. I wanted to bring these foods to my community. I do not only care deeply about my own health, but I also care about the health of others. I strongly believe that food can make a difference in someone’s health. Shop Karen Berrios sources the highest quality Peruvian superfoods that one can find. This is my promise. Organic, gluten-free, sustainably and ethically farmed, low-glycemic… my foods are meant to do a body GOOD. They say prevention is the best cure and if are looking to add superfoods that will enhance your wellbeing, I encourage you to check out my shop. My foods are targeted and versatile and I know there is something there just waiting for you and anyone wanting to live a healthy lifestyle.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I have lived in Southern California for a long time now and although there are many fancy and trendy spots, somehow I always end up going to the same ones that I believe support my health and lifestyle. These are some of my favorite places to go to if you are visiting the LA/ San Diego area: www.graciasmadre.co/ in West Hollywood www.truefoodkitchen.com/locations/sandiegoutc/ San Diego www.organicroots.net/ Temecula www.eatmarketplace.com/ Temecula www.cafegratitude.com/ San Diego
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
There are most definitely so many positive influencers in my circle. Throughout my healing walk, I have met outstanding doctors, healers, mentors, that deserve recognition for their dedication and perseverance as they continue to do for so many what they have done for me. Today though I will dedicate this shoutout to one of them, Dr. Erik Lundquist for his compassion and sincere care for all his patients. Dr. Lundquist is the founder and medical director of the Temecula Center for Integrative Medicine. He is so loved in our community and highly recognized for his outstanding medical practices that go beyond the scope of traditional medicine. He is most definitely the one you want on your team!
