We had the good fortune of connecting with Kate Faust and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Kate, why did you pursue a creative career?
I pursued an artistic career because I truly believe that music, being a vessel of creativity, and refining my ability to share my energy and my heart through an artistic medium is what I came into this life to understand. All of my teaching work and all of my life lessons surround this central point… that power, empowerment, healing, pure expression is all about the ability to surrender, to allow, to take up space, to broken open and reformed, to shapeshift, to say “yes” to all of life, to be fully in our bodies, to be willing to be wrong and so far from what we know is possible and find the capacity in ourselves to keep going. I have a career because I have to. I have to work an earn money to justify my existence under a capitalist system. I understand that and I work and play within that. But I also feel clear that I would be creating music, have been writing essays and poetry and dreaming out loud about the bigger questions in life whether people are watching or not.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I’m a musician, singer, and songwriter. I’ve been making music, playing, recording, and teaching the voice for over ten years. The perspective of the artist/creative informs everything that I do and it keeps me open to deeper and deeper levels of evolution. My journey has not always been an easy one, and it has required me to heal myself and deepen my sense of power and worth over and over again. I have always been working in the spiritual realms, but all of that started to amp up in 2016 as I uprooted my life and moved to Los Angeles from Philadelphia. I was experiencing my Saturn return as well as the beginnings of a spiritual awakening. More of my gifts of mediumship and channeling came through in 2017/2018. I began to realize that I had been using my Intuitive gifts through my practice of teaching the voice for the whole previous decade without really claiming it. It explained why I attracted the kind of students I did and why many of them thought of me as a music teacher and a life coach. Music is an incredible resource and a beautiful allegory to the realm of energy and Spirit. All of spiritual terms we use such as energy, vibration, resonance, focus, co creation… all of them are literally embodied through the practice of playing and making music… particularly with using our voice. I began to openly offer energy work and teach Intuitive Voice workshops, and then with the onset of Covid brought my teaching work to an online learning and membership platform. It’s a special community where we hold bi-weekly classes as well as breathwork ceremony. I’m excited to continue to evolve my music, as well as support this community… many of them musicians and artists like myself.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Well, assuming that we were safe to be freely moving about… I would take them to Griffith Park or potentially to Malibu depending on what day of the week and what part of town we were in. I would take them to K-town for food… probably Dan Sung Sa for dinner. We would may hit a rooftop bar like Mama Shelter or the Ace hotel. Definitely need to check out a concert or a soundbath. I’m more of a homebody so I’m not the most exciting host! I’d definitely want to take a visit to Watts Tower.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
There are so many people who have loved me into being and have helped me to become more and more of who I am and let go of who I’m not. My parents are two people that, even when they didn’t understand me, always set forth to love me and encourage me in the best way they could. That support has always grounded me. Their love and their steadfastness is part of how I manage to be deeply creative and spiritual while maintaining a grounded sense of clarity. I have to give a shout out to my best friend and platonic soul mate, Tempest Carter, who has been my sister through so much change and evolution and has also served as a grounding, advocating force in my life. Our friendship continues to make me a better person. I also have to shout out the musicians that I’ve played music with and all of the people who’ve found my work over the years and showed me love. They helped to give me the strength to keep going, even though I’ve lost all hope several times over. I want to shout out the spiritual teachers who have changed my life for the better: Maryam Hasnaa and New Earth Mystery School as being an integral part of my journey, and Wahe Guru Kaur (Pithia) for bringing me in closer to my ancestral shamanic lineage. Everyone in the Sound Spirit community and who have encouraged me to teach Intuitive Voice and share my teaching work, especially Julia Pryde- I’m deeply grateful to you!
