We had the good fortune of connecting with Katharine Polk and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Katharine, what role has risk played in your life or career?
Risk has been a huge factor in my career from the start of my first company Houghton. My idea to create a “non-traditional Bridal” Brand that didn’t exist was risky but had a huge upside if I/we could pull it off. Like any successful company, when you fill a void for something that doesn’t exist you have to change peoples minds and that is always hard. Taking a risk to convince an industry that it was time for change and women wanted something new and modern for their weddings was tough but worth it.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
We all have our struggles and our stories. I look at my career as 2 chapters. I had a great start with my first brand Houghton and I learned so much. After I closed my brand in 2018, I really had to start from scratch. I am so proud that I have been able to launch my new company ‘Katharine Polk Bridal’ as a self funded and self run brand with out any outside financing. It took me longer than I would of liked but I bootstrapped it and hustled while consulting for other brands. In 2018 I founded my consulting company KRP Creative, that consults for brands in the fashion space, lending creative and business services.
While running both companies I have been able to slowly grow and get my Bridal voice back into the game. My confidence definitely took a hard hit after closing Houghton in 2018 and I needed time to physically and mentally recover before being able to jump back in but I also needed to make a living. None of this has been easy and thank god I have experience on my side. I have always made sure to be kind and grateful to everyone and anyone I’ve worked with and I believe the support of other creatives that I’ve received has been a result of that.
What would I want anyone to know about my brand story? This is just the beginning and I can’t wait to share my true vision with you all. I am just grateful to get another shot!

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Well…Are we talking a Covid trip or Non-Covid Trip 😉 I’m from Malibu and now live in Studio City. I’d probably bring them over to our farm to see the mini horses and take them for a drive up the PCH maybe to Ventura or Ojai for some beautiful views and grab a burrito at Lily’s Malibu. We could go for some beautiful hikes around Malibu and venture to the beach. I have some secret spots! We could grab my favorite smoothie and a wellness shot from Vitamin barn after the hike. My favorite lunch salad is the Il’Tram Chopped Salad from Il Trammezzino in Studio City, we would sit outside and just people watch.
For some culture, head over to the Getty for a day of art then shoot down the 405 to Titos Tacos in Culver City. For dinner it would definitely be sushi so back to Studio where we have the best.
For a night in and being lazy, we could order take out from the best pizza and dessert at LBK with the most unbelievable Nutella fried dessert.
I’m always down for a drive down to Laguna and a quick In-n-Out stop! What’s a car ride without a burger?!
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
There are so many people that believed in me along the way from the editors who took a chance on publishing my work, the brides who wore my gowns, the stores who carried the collections and my amazing teams who helped build my brands.
