We had the good fortune of connecting with Katie Walter and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Katie, what role has risk played in your life or career?

From the outside looking in, most people see my life as full of risk – on a daily basis – but I would call it more TRUST than anything else!  Yes, I gave away most everything I owned and left my ‘glamorous to society’s standards Hollywood life’ for the unknown, but these almost six years as a nomad – with my one carry on suitcase – have been extraordinary beyond my wildest dreams! Risk is defined as “a situation involving exposure to danger.”  The only thing I’ve been exposed to is magnificence … that is, when I TRUST my listening and obediently follow the steps put before me!

What do I mean by listening?  Silencing all my thoughts, emotions and personal attachments in exchange for a knowing that infinite good is possible right here, right now – for me, my neighbor, all mankind!  I could fill volume upon volume of stories where my daily practice of that has blessed me, and others, in ways that even gives Hollywood a run for its money!

One of my earliest examples of this was when my career modeling and acting moved me to New York City when I was only 16.  People thought that was crazy but I had a deep down sense – through every step of the unfoldment – that there was a power bigger than me at work (call it God, divine Love, Source, I AM, Universe, whatever suits you best) and I was simply along for the ride.  As it was all happening, I couldn’t fathom the purposeful journey that was being launched, but I trusted and was obedient and am forever grateful!

After almost 20 years of gathering evidence of just how powerful trust, listening and obedience can be, the only risk I see is getting so caught up in my own willful, limited sense of things, that I miss the infinite possibilities all around!

Opportunities to stretch outside my comfort zone and drop a little bit more self-will and ego are around every turn and I’ve come to rejoice in them (even when I fall short)!

Living apart from daily schedules, agendas, routines has allowed more space for God to take the lead and I continue to learn how to be a better follower – whether the dance involves a sudden spin, dip, or side-step!  I LOVE to lead so this adventure has fostered a lot of growth and my favorite part is witnessing how each move not only blesses me, but exponentially blesses others as well!

We can’t go wrong when we trust our pure intuition…. And if the path seems to get bumpy, never fear, wonderful things are taking place – whether we can see them right now, or not!  I say that with utter confidence because I’ve seen it proven in my life, and the lives of others, over and over and over again!  I’ve also found that a trusting heart isn’t taken half way or to something that’s “so-so” or “adequate.”  When we trust and are willing to lay it all on the line, I have found we end up extraordinarily supported!  It’s the whole “leap and THEN the net appears” idea!

Does that mean that everyone should walk out on their daily lives?  No way!  That’s simply how this journey has currently manifested in my experience!  You are unique.  Your gifts are unique.  Your listening is unique.  Your breakthrough opportunities are unique.  Our culture has become so shackled by constant comparison.  We have to be willing to get out of our own way!  We must be willing to shed the sense of “self” that identifies us in ways that may be consciously, or unconsciously, limiting our experience.  On the other side of that willingness to let go of the old, is an infinite blank canvas of possibility!

Even if it feels like a risk, my invitation to you is to still all the outside influences (of society, expectations, social media, etc) and truly listen for what it is deep within that makes you YOU!  Then be willing to go give the gift of who you are away!  When we give, we automatically receive!  So while it might feel risky to trust, I have found trust to be the exact place where your most cherished, unexpected dreams come to fruition!

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?

My nomadic journey is very much a spiritual one.  HEALING is a global topic and one that is very near and dear to my heart!   Amidst global pandemic, isolation, financial insecurity, political unrest, environmental turmoil – the list goes on -, the hunger for healing runs deep.  I love this line from Mary Baker Eddy: “My prayer, some daily good to do, to Thine, for Thee;  An offering pure of Love, whereto God leadeth me.”  I guess you could say, I seek to be an offering everyday!  That has come through humanitarian work in third world countries, volunteering as a life coach, work as a professional organizer, keynote speaker, and work in the Metaphysical Christian Science Healing Practice.

As I’ve witnessed extraordinary healing in the lives of those I’m working with, the allure of the script has faded.  At this point, my career/purpose is all about opening my eyes- and the eyes of others – to the Good that IS;  it’s a commitment to seeking, and therefore finding, whatever is worthy of rejoicing, even where it seems there is no good to be found!

When I face challenges, I strive to shift my thought into a place of gratitude.  In any moment, we can find something to be grateful for – even if it’s as simple as the breath we just took!  Gratitude has a way of taking any challenge and turning it on it’s head.  I’ve also learned to give my self grace.  Often, we are so very hard on ourselves.  We talk to ourselves in ways we wouldn’t dream of speaking to others.  I think silencing the harsh inner critic and embracing ourselves with compassion, patience and unconditional love, as we would a struggling child or friend, is so important and needed today!  Many philosophies speak of God as “I AM.”  If indeed we are one with God, when we speak down to ourselves, it’s as though we are speaking down to God.  How important then, to be mindful of what we think and say!

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?

Pointe Dume is a MUST!

Runyon Canyon was my backyard so it’s always a pitstop for me in LA!

I can’t miss my favorite hip hop dance classes at Crunch gym on Sunset Blvd. or the dance floor at The Warehouse in Marina Del Rey for Salsa Night!

Thai Vegan and Samosa House Indian in Santa Monica are go-to’s for delicious cuisine and if cupcakes are on the docket, we’d be dropping by Hansen’s Cakes in Little Ethiopia for sure!

I adore a day at Olympic Spa – with their fabulous Asian baths and scrubs – or if we only have time for a quick spa experience, I’d take them to Sunset Foot Spa off La Brea!

Close to my heart is also The Mission in DTLA so hopefully we could get in to serve a meal there or at least find a way to spread some love and joy on skid row!

Los Angeles has so much to offer.. I could go on and on!

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My shoutout goes loud and clear to a book I study every day called SCIENCE & HEALTH: WITH KEY TO THE SCRIPTURES, by Mary Baker Eddy! This revolutionary book has been changing lives for well over 100 years!
