We had the good fortune of connecting with Kayla Simpson and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Kayla, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
From a very young age I knew I wanted to help children, so I went to college to be a teacher. It was there I fell in love with teaching pre-k. Soon after graduation, I was hired as teacher and began teaching my own classroom of four year olds. It was a dream come true… at least that’s what I thought. Although my days were spent with laughter, play, and art, after 5 years I just knew something did not feel right. Each year more academics and demands were expected, leaving less time for play. I could see how it was affecting the little ones: tantrums, developmental delays, and lack of social skills just to name a few. This was not a learning environment I was willing to continue in. I knew I could use my skills, knowledge, and experience to create a more holistic learning environment. Hesitant to leave such a stable career, I remained for another two. However, this was the moment I began planting the seeds for my business, Sprouting Spirits. Classes began January 2020, and even managed to expand that summer with a few tweaks! A year later, I was ready to take the leap. I quit my public school job, packed my bags, and moved to Los Angeles knowing my business could thrive here.

Sprouting Spirits was created to nurture the whole child through play, creation, and imagination. Creating my business allowed me to give myself the opportunity to thrive as a teacher without the restrictions of following a curriculum. This way I could end the day happy and proud to be an educator. I knew if I was happy, my students would be happy. One size does not fit all. American education has to be changed. Sprouting Spirits is one step towards that. Children are met to grow freely!

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
Sprouting Spirits offers holistic based classes for children 1.5-12. Classes are always held in nature and encourage imagination. We do yoga, mindfulness, energy work, social emotional skills, connect with nature spirits, and more! What makes Sprouting Spirits so unique is the sense of community between parents, children, and teacher. Sprouting Spirits aims to connect like-minded families. Children are invited to be their true self and to take risks. Parents are invited to connect with each other and relax while their littles engage. It truly takes a village to raise a child.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Venice! It’s the most creative place you’ll ever go. Just take a stroll down the boardwalk and you’ll see live music, people on stilts, and beautiful art just steps away from the sand. The best part is the watching the vibrant sunset over the mountains and ocean! It’s paradise!

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My mentor, Eva Goulette, gave me the beginning tools I needed to begin Sprouting Spirits. Once trained to be a Spirit Camp Teacher, through Dancing Jaguars, I was able to start teaching classes and camps. From there I was able to use my experience as a teacher and what I learned from Eva to expand Sprouting Spirits. She is a true inspiration.

Also special shout out to the mamas both in Massachusetts and LA! Sprouting Spirits would not be if it weren’t for you! I’m so thankful to have met and learned from everyone of you!
