We had the good fortune of connecting with Kim Nguyen and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Kim, why did you pursue a creative career?
I love being able to use creativity as a way to inspire, to educate, and to solve problems. No day is ever the same and you are constantly challenging yourself to learn something new.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I have always been a jack of all trades. I love learning new things and trying out different art forms. When I got into the concrete world, I was hooked. I think the coolest thing about concrete is that you can’t really control it, sometimes you have to just accept the imperfections. And being an Art Director who is also technically trained it was hard to not be a perfectionist. Working with concrete and starting a concrete business has allowed me to step away from the computer and really experiment and learn that there is beauty in imperfection. I think it’s easy for us to slip into this mindset that everything has to be pixel perfect. And knowing that it doesn’t always have to be that way is so reassuring especially in today’s day and age. When people have a Dusty Mei piece, I hope that it brings a little bit of warmth into their lives. With every piece being truly unique I hope it reminds people that they too are just as unique.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I have always been a foodie, so if anyone is coming to hang out for the weekend you can bet that we are heading to Koreatown. The best restaurants in town for anytime of day. Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My late grandmother is the reason behind Dusty Mei, the company is even named after her. She was always so smart, crafty, and hardworking. It was so inspiring growing up with her as she worked in her garden or on a random new project. After she passed, I saw so much of her in my parents. They always solved my problems in the most creative ways and even now they are a huge part of Dusty Mei and constantly helping me in any way that they can.
