We had the good fortune of connecting with Kristin Jordan and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Kristin, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
I think generally everyone here’s “Start my own business” and thinks to themselves “OH that is my dream”. But they never really think about what is really behind starting and owning your own business. There are up and down days. There are good and bad months. There are times when things get tough and do you have the mental toughness to make it through. It’s not all fun and games. I think if you truly want to start your own business you need to be in love with what you want to start. If you don’t love it. It will eat you alive and run your life. You have to have passion, drive, love and the desire to do whatever it takes no matter how hard it gets. If you can do that and stay true to you, you can conquer anything. When I knew I wanted to start my own business vs work for someone else I knew it was going to take sleepless nights, 14-16 hour days and sometimes it was not going to be easy. But I am so in love with helping others and fitness that the other stuff didn’t matter to me. I will do whatever it takes to survive.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I own a small personal training studio in Hermosa Beach, CA. I also run and manage corporate bootcamps in Michigan and California. Nothing has been easy and with COVID it just made it even more challenging. But we have adapted with everything and made the changes we never thought we would make to keep running and surviving and every time we are thrown a loop hole we find another way. If it was easy everyone would do it. Nothing in business is easy. But you have to be passionate and willing to adapt on the fly and make it happen. That’s what sets me and any business owner aside from the rest. I have learned so many lessons along the way but most importantly is the ability to adapt and grow and fast. You have to just do it, might not work but everything is worth the risk in the end. I use to workout at the gym we now own 10 years ago. Always said it would be a dream to own it and have the location. 8 years later that dream became a reality and the rest is history!
Any great local spots you’d like to shoutout?
Oh man. I own a business so I don’t have a lot of time for knowing the area. But when my bestie comes to town we spend most of our time hiking in LA or laying on the beach or my favorite resort Terrenea we head there for the day for the spa and relax.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Man this question is hard. There are so many people who have gotten me to where I am today. But to sum it all up I would say my husband. He has supported and pushed me along every hurdle no matter what it is. If it wasn’t for him I would have never pursued my dream of starting my own business and now owning my own gym. He has been my rock. Delt with me when I have not been the prettiest or the best and supported every decision I have ever made. Couldn’t have done any of it without him.
