We had the good fortune of connecting with Lindsey Klein and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Lindsey, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
Shortly after graduating college and starting my first fashion design job in DTLA, I knew I wasn’t meant to sit behind a desk and work 40 hours a week. I felt unfulfilled because I had always dreamed of directly impacting women through fashion. So I started my own e-commerce women’s fashion brand called Liberated Society because I deeply desired to influence women powerfully and positively through fashion. Liberated Society’s mission is to inspire women to live their dream life while looking and feeling their best! Liberated Society is more than a fashion brand but a community of women empowering women to live their dream life, whatever their dream life is! Everyone’s dream life is so unique and different from one and another and Liberated Society is here to inspire you to go after yours.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
From a young age, I realized how fashion impacts yourself and the people around you. In 2007 in middle school I was the first person to wear skinny jeans for the first time, and a lot of people had different reactions to it which showed me how powerful an outfit is! I knew from that moment on that I wanted to dress women in clothes that make them look and feel their best. To do this I knew I had to become a fashion designer. Now a lot of parents want their kids to become doctors or lawyers, but my heart was set from a young age to be a fashion designer. Luckily my parents were supportive but they wanted me to go to a real college and not a trade school for fashion. They got their way and I got a Bachelors of Science in Apparel Manufacturing and Management from the California State Polytechnic University of Pomona. I loved my time at CPP and am thankful for the education I received, but fashion is all about connections, and I didn’t have the same connections compared to designers who graduated from other technical trade schools in DTLA. It was very hard finding my first job out of college and took over 3 months to get. I took a job as an assistant fashion designer in Vernon and that began my fashion design career. Since then I have worked in the fashion industry for the past 5 years designing for some of the biggest retailers in the country like Fashion Nova, Tillys, Buckle, and Rue 21. While I achieved my dream of being a fashion designer, I was unfulfilled and unhappy working for someone else. I knew I was meant for more so I created my own e-commerce women’s fashion brand called Liberated Society. Liberated Society is more than a fashion brand but a community of women empowering women to live their dream life while looking and feeling their best. II have achieved my dream life, and I want to help other women do the same through fashion. The biggest thing I have learned from this journey is to never doubt yourself and always keep going, even when it gets tough. We are all capable of achieving our dreams and sometimes we just need support and encouragement to do that while looking and feeling our best, and that is what Liberated Society is.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I would definitely take my best friend to hike Runyon Canyon for a DTLA city view, or Temescal Canyon for a beach view. Also, go to The Butcher, The Baker & The Cappuccino Maker Cafe, for the coolest colorbust latte, or Groundwork Coffee for the horchata cold brew and most amazing breakfast burrito. We would have to drive along sunset blvd through Beverly Hills to Malibu Canyon Country Mart to spend the day shopping and relaxing at the beach. We can’t miss a beautiful Cali sunset so we would have to go to these rooftops bars: Mama Shelter, High Rooftop Lounge at The Erwin, and E.P & L.P.
