We had the good fortune of connecting with Lisa Mastela, MPH, RD and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Lisa, what principle do you value most?
As a founder, CEO, and a mom, the idea of balance in my life is always top of mind. It’s so easy to get caught up in work and lose sight of what really matters – what mark you’re really going to leave on the world and on the people in your life. Balancing my life in a way that makes me feel happy, confident, and fulfilled matters more to me than anything. Sometimes this looks like slowing down the growth of my company so that I can work less while my son is an infant, sometimes it means saying no to a meeting so that I can go to to that yoga class, and sometimes it looks like staying up an extra hour to make that new business deal perfect. I’m constantly reminding myself (and needing to remind myself even more!) that balance is key, and that nothing is more important than throwing that balance off. Once things are out of balance, everything goes with it – my kids crave more attention from me, I feel more tired and impatient, business problems seem insurmountable, and I feel like quitting and giving up. Once I remind myself what’s important – that my kids will only ever be this young right now, that certain emails can most definitely wait, and that my family’s and my own health, sleep, and joy are my top priority, suddenly things fall into place.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Bumpin Blends creates pre-blended, frozen, absolutely delicious smoothie cubes – Just pop the cubes into your blender, add liquid, and blend. Each of our 30 dietitian-designed flavors is made to support a specific symptom. So whether you’re dealing with low energy, trouble sleeping, mood swings, anxiety, dull skin, bloating, or even low sex drive, we have a blend to help.
I had my background and education in nutrition sciences and biology, with that I was managing my own body using smoothies. So, when I was pregnant I was sort of “hacking” my symptoms with my daily smoothies. If I had swelling or nausea or moodiness or low energy, I’d mix together the right ingredients with the right minerals and vitamins in the right way to help me. In doing this, I got stitches chopping veggies, stained my countertop with wild blueberries, blended a wooden spatula into my blender (twice!), and just spent so much time figuring out the formulas, making a mess, and wasting food. It was just so much work and wasn’t realistic to do every day. All my friends and family were obsessed with my smoothies, I knew they really worked, and I knew that they could help a lot of people.
So, I strapped my newborn to me in a baby carrier and started blending smoothies in my garage. I sold them in person at local shops and small expos, and built a scrappy website and Instagram myself. Now almost 3 years later, we ship nationwide to thousands of happy customers (obviously not from my garage anymore!).
It was of course not easy, and there have been several hurdles along the way. Bouts of slow or no growth, not enough money to order ingredients or pay rent, learning that no one wants to buy smoothies in winter, oh, and a global pandemic. When COVID hit, I lost my entire staff, my supply chains, my ingredients, my personal nanny, my shipping center and methods, all without notice. I was also in my first trimester (morning sickness, extreme fatigue, and all!), and now had no help with my busy, active 18-month-old. I was able to not only solve all of Bumpin’s immediate issues to get our customers their smoothies within 2 weeks, but I laid the ground work for us to better serve our community, give back exponentially, and provide jobs for industries overlooked in the pandemic. I also rolled up my sleeves and blended smoothies myself to keep up with our booming sales and newly-still-in-training-staff – and for 6 months I woke up at 4am to head to our kitchen and blend and package smoothies before my husband had to start work, so I could be home by 9am to watch our daughter. Then after his work day was over at 5pm, I’d start my work for the day and work till 12am (except for a break to make dinner for my family and do bath and bedtime with my daughter!), only to get up at 4am. All. While. Pregnant. That was a rough, but really exciting time for Bumpin Blends.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
With two kids under 4 years old, I’m going to be honest – I don’t get out much. But, my husband, kiddos, and I have found some great gems around LA. We live in Westchester, so are a hop and a skip away from Playa del Rey, Culver City, and Manhattan Beach. Any friend visiting is going to spend the day in El Segundo with us – maybe a walk along Main St with a stop at Blue Butterfly coffee for breakfast, then off to the rec park and playground (cause, you know, kids!). Dinner at either Jame Entoteca (the best secret Italian food in LA), pizza and beers at Slice and Pint, or burgers in the grass at The Point. Speaking of beers, we’d also have to head to Three Weavers Brewery in Westchester another night for great drinks, food trucks, corn hole, and fire pits. Walking Abbot Kinney in Venice or The Strand in Manhattan Beach is a must too. Beyond stroller walks and window shopping, good food, playgrounds, and kid-friendly breweries, they might have to find a more exciting friend for the rest! 🙂
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I’ve been so humbled by the many, many incredible founders I’ve met along the way in my journey. Particularly other mom-founders and female founders, many of whom I’ve met through Hey Mama Co and The Female Founder Collective. They’re all so inspiring and seem like superheroes in my eyes. Bumpin Blends wouldn’t be where it is today without the support of so many of them, but to name a few…. Amanda Kloots, Olivia Herrick, Sarah Kuhn, Chrissy Teigen, Tori Roloff, Caitlin Covington, and Liz Potter. Not to mention my incredible team, some of whom have worked with Bumpin Blends since our first month in business, including Meghan Hansen and Emily Hodgson. And of course my husband and parents, who are all tied as Bumpin Blend’s #1 fan and are always overflowing with support, great ideas, and inspiration to keep going.
