Meet Luisa Buenrostro | Actress, Singer & Dancer

We had the good fortune of connecting with Luisa Buenrostro and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Luisa, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking.
As an actor, embracing risk-taking is, in my opinion, one of the most vital skills to hone early in your career. My relationship with risk is a constant dance between taking chances and playing it safe. Taking risks on a daily basis often looks like stepping into an audition room and making a bold choice. In other instances, it looks like fully producing your own work and putting it out there. In life in general I feel like a good portion of the people you admire got there by taking some kind of risk. Looking back, I can see how these risks have made me a better artist, both the wins and the lessons learned from the misses. Not to mention the financial risk of being an actor overall 🙂

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
It all started feeling real when I decided to pursue professional training in Musical Theatre and realized that moving to the United States was the best option for me. I was fortunate to receive a full scholarship to attend The American Musical and Dramatic Academy (AMDA) conservatory program, prompting my move from Mexico to the East Coast. After graduating, I started landing some gigs here and there, figuring things out as I went along and realized this life was worth the ups and downs. Despite knowing the industry is full of rejection, I firmly believe that the right mindset attracts good opportunities.
For me this mindset involves falling so in love with your art that every time you enter a room you are excited to play, share and create. It’s about knowing your skillset so well that you can unlock new ways of presenting any material. It’s about building a habit to always go back to training because a performing craft requiring constant practice.
Networking has been a significant challenge, especially coming from another country and being naturally reserved. However, I’ve been pushing myself out of my comfort zone, initiating conversations, and exploring roles beyond performing. I’ve learned that every person I meet holds potential for collaboration, whether it’s in a creative endeavor or a friendship.
Currently, I’m working on producing an original song in Spanish set to be released this year and I’ve been itching to write a short play (hopefully I will get my hands on that sometime soon). I am so excited for what my artistic future holds and in the mean time I am enjoying the process and learning more about myself each day. I am doing what brings me joy and that has been bringing joy to others….so I think I am on the right track.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
When guests come over, I usually ask them to have ideas in mind for what they want to do, and I “handle” the logistics. But definately visiting iconic landmarks is a must in this city. And of course, we gotta catch a Broadway show (or maybe two) while we’re at it. After a solid pregame, we’re heading to a latin club for some serious partying. One of my favorite activities is a picnic in Central Park, if the weather cooperates. And if we’re feeling extra adventurous, I might suggest going Six Flags amusement park in Jersey. I usually ‘go with the flow’ when it comes to planning, but I promise I’ve been trying to be more proactive lately. Previous experiences have led me to understand there’s just too much going on to wing it in NYC.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Big shoutout to everyone I’ve ever collaborated with and created art alongside! From my awesome family and friends to the incredible teachers, mentors, and peers who’ve had my back. And a massive thank you to my parents for always being there, supporting me, and taking risks with me to chase my dreams since day one. Los amo simper! Mil gracias!
